Before that subject line goes and makes things too awkward, lemme clarify that this is mostly going to be a post about how I'm finally tackling the job of getting my long-neglected AO3 account up to date with all that fic I have been writing. Progress so far has been largely dependent on a new habit of uploading a chapter or two a day while I'm wait for my latest site simulation to run (one of those frustrating little things that takes most of a minute to finish, thus becoming long-enough-to-get-bored during but not long-enough-to-get-something-else-done) but it's still progress and not to be sneezed at. So far I'm done importing everything I had archived over at my old fanfic.net account (also neglected since way back in 2009, ugh). I feel that if one is going to commit oneself to doing a job like this it ought to be done right, and that means uploading everything I have ever posted, in chronological order. My few old Naruto and Kingdom Hearts fics are all done; so's most of xxxHOLiC, and some of my early Guilty Gear. Having got that far, however, I've hit minor snag, which is to say I've gone and reminded myself of one of the things that's kept me from doing all this much sooner.

Way back in the day in xxxHOLiC fandom circa 2007, I put out a call for people to give holic/Tsubasa Alternate Universe prompts, wound up picking eight to write and generally had terrifically good fun with it all. One of those ficlets went on to spawn a much longer story set in a post-apocalyptic universe that I called The Telling of One Billion Ghost Stories*. I took to posting it under a draft label in chunks of about 2000 words a week through 2007-08, eventually coming in at over 90,000 words. Since the longest story I'd ever written before clocked in at maybe 25,000, this was A Big Deal - the first real proof I'd ever been able to produce that I was capable of writing novel-length fiction. All it needed now was some revisions and cleaning up so I could drop the 'draft' label before I could post it properly.

And there I hit the problems, because my investment in xxxHOLiC was waning at that point, and the original ficlet didn't really work as well as the beginning of a novel, but making myself revise something I'd written so long ago (and was still quite attached to at that) was never going to be easy, and looking back on it now this would be about when the depression was really setting in for me and everything was getting harder. I made a spirited attempt at getting the job done, but getting the first chapter to work remained a major stumbling block, and the laptop I'd taken to doing most of my editing on wasn't running the right word processing program and all these other little things kept getting in the way. I lost contact with the person who'd offered to beta for me (which I really cannot blame her for considering how badly I was struggling with enthusiasm for the project myself) and finishing Ghost Stories joined the growing list of things which existed to make me feel guilty for never feeling up to doing them. And so it was that every time I looked at my ff.net account with all my old holic stories, I'd remind myself about the story I was meant to be finishing, and end up doing neither.

It was pretty much inevitable that when I got up to uploading those old xxxHOLiC AU ficlets to AO3 I was going to go through the whole thing again. The good news on that front is that this time, I decided what the hey - may as well have one more crack at it, tracked down my last version of the first part of Ghost Stories, and ended up rewriting the opening paragraph in one sitting. The rest of the first chapter still needed a of more work, so I gave myself a deadline: by the time I'd finished posting the rest of the old AU ficlets to AO3**, I'd have it done.

I sent it off to a friend to have a look over the other day. I've been working on this story now for far too long to have any sort of objective opinion on it myself anymore, but I know if I can just get the beginning sorted out, the rest will be easier. It doesn't have to be perfect at this stage - I know people read and enjoyed the draft version. What matters is that I'll have it done at last. It's the longest single piece of writing I've ever written before or since, and I'll be able to point to it and say, hey, not only can I write novel length fiction, I can stick out the job long enough to get it finished and posted. And just maybe, a few people who never found the draft will read it and enjoy it. That's worth trying for.

I could still really use a new beta reader if anyone's up for helping me with the rest though. There's a lot of words on this thing still to go.

* Casual ref there to an event from xxxHOliC canon where the characters sat down to tell a hundred ghost stories in a ritual format (they only got as far as four, but the 'Hundred Ghost Stories' thing has significance in Japanese mythology).

** Which I must admit I have been taking my sweet time on, but what the hell.

I have reached that point with my WIP list lately where no matter what I sit down to work on, there will be that nagging voice in the back of my mind telling me I really ought to be working on one of the other ones (it would be nice if this at least deterred me from compounding the problem by starting new stuff, but... well, let's just say that recent fling with Inception fandom has not done much to help matters). In the usual Catch 22 of such matters, this is not helping my productivity on anything.

So in hope of getting my priorities in some kind of logical order (and also out of general curiosity), have a poll:

[Poll #1648224]

Usual disclaimer: inspiration being what it is I cannot guarantee that whatever wins the poll will be what gets posted next, but I can promise to make the extra effort.

While I'm on the subject, if anyone does want to ask, say, 'have you actually made any progress on [X]?' or 'are you ever planning on continuing [Y]?' or what-have-you, by all means, go for it.
rallamajoop: (cosplay)
There's a line in my userinfo (in fact, it's pretty much my whole userinfo) that reads "So, occasionally, and I mean very occasionally, I actually get around to doing things." I have to-do lists that go back years. Mostly not filled with stuff that is, y'know, important in the RL sense, but still. Years.

I mention this by way of explaining why it feels like so much of an achievement that I have finally signed up for a cosplay.com account. Actually, that's not the achievement - the achievement is the part where I'm doing something with it, like finally getting around to sorting through the last 4-5 years worth of con photos and photoshoots and deciding what's worth uploading. A lot of those events had already been halfway-sorted for various livejournal posts (or by my sister, who is a lot more organised about updating her deviantart and flickr accounts) - but you can probably imagine why I've had so much trouble even making myself think about the job without doing the mental equivalent of curling up in a foetal position on the floor somewhere. Well, no longer!

So far, I've got as far as doing FFVII Yuffie (two cons, two photoshoots), KH2/AC Yuffie (four cons), River (three costume balls, one con), Hiei (two cons), and most of Millia (two cons, one epic trip to Japan, and two photoshoots which I'm still in the middle of sorting through). Still to go: the Balldress!Millia, Joshua, Goth-loli!Joshua, Syaoran, and both Kys. So, plenty left to go yet, but to be hovering somewhere around the halfway point doesn't feel half bad.

In the hope that this is the start of some kind of trend, I present below a shortlist of some other items that I really seriously honestly hopefully intend to get around to doing sometime in the near future. And if I don't, well, you are all completely within your rights to nag me about them. (Not to mention probably half a dozen other things I haven't even remembered just at the moment.)

Other websites needing updating, and a couple of old pieces of CLAMP and Guilty Gear fic that are still getting written, I *swear*! )

*cracks knuckles*
rallamajoop: (kurogane>you)
Continuing the theme of 'posts I had half written before cosplay took over my free time for a month, I finally got around to catching up on both xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa a couple of months ago – to discover that Tsubasa had actually gone and ended in my absence. *cough* Definitely time to catch up.

Thoughts on the ending, plus recent holic – SPOILERS, obviously )
rallamajoop: (xxxHolic)
I can only suppose that by this point, it would probably surprise anyone who's still reading for the purpose that I haven't completely forgotten about The Telling of One Billion Ghost Stories - a.k.a. the novel-length xxxHolic/Tsubasa post-apocalyptic AU fic that I posted in draft form back in 07/08, and have been promising to revise and repost ever since. *hangs head in shame*

Actually, most of my own edits have been finished since earlier this year. Unfortunately, since then distractions have been myriad, and now it seems that neither of the friends who originally volunteered to beta for me have been having much luck finding the time to go through this 90,000 word monster of a fic. :/ So more than a year since I posted the final chapter, I'm finally back to hunting for anyone who may be willing to beta for me. Soon for preference, though I'm painfully aware I don't have much freedom to be picky in that regard.

<.< Any volunteers?
rallamajoop: (xxxHolic)
Obviously I didn't attempt NaNo this year or you would've all heard about it. But since one thing or another has kept me from writing or posting hardly any fic since I finished the Ghost Stories draft in late July, I did declare November Local Get On With It Already Month, and turned out the reasonably respectable total of about 20,000 words (most of which haven't been edited or posted yet). That's not counting over 15,000 words worth of posts since I got back from Japan about all that stuff I've been up to lately, which doesn't strictly count but does chew into one's writing time in a significant sort of way. So I'm going to call that a decent sort of success.

While I'm talking about writing, I thought I'd post a new WIP list - partly so I can use it for my own checklist, but also for anyone who might be interested in what's in the works (or who wants to put in a vote for where my priorities should be out of all those different projects). No proper extracts this time because I am feeling lazy though convincing me to add them in probably would not be all that hard.

Also while I'm talking about writing, [livejournal.com profile] cheloya and [livejournal.com profile] lunargeography, I know neither of you are on LJ much lately, but if you are reading this, are you still up for betaing duties if the story in question is ready some time soon? ^^;

Will be back to worry about how long it's going to take to edit this monster into a finished version neurose about how much better it was meant to be throw the obligatory OMG IT'S DONE party later. \o/
rallamajoop: (xxxHolic)
Note to self: There was a reason you used to limit these to 2000 words per chapter rather than three times that much, and it had a lot to do with that being a nice, comfortable sort of total to deal with on a weekly basis while maintaining your sanity, general wellbeing, keeping up with other commitments etc. Also, endings are hard, but you already knew that.

On the other hand, being six thousand words closer to the ending which is right on top of you all in one post is just about worth it. *_*

rallamajoop: (xxxHolic)
Ye gods, I was not counting on this chapter taking this long to finish. >_< Wasn't counting on it turning into a single scene that went on for very nearly six thousand words either. It's been a real chapter for underestimation. I'm so very sorry.

Just a quick side note to since there've been quite a lot of people pointing out typos in the last couple of chapters: I appreciate that people are trying to help me out, but I'm not labeling this thing a 'draft' because I expect my audience to do the betaing for me, I'm doing it because it helps to have that regular posting schedule to keep the momentum going, even though I'm still half expecting I'll wind up completely rewriting every other line between now and the finished version. So combing through for spelling errors is probably a bit of a waste of everyone's time at this stage, especially when corrections made on LJ posts generally don't make it back to the main word document on account of authorial laziness and will only have to be found again later if they don't get written out in the meantime. I'll have to get to finding someone to do a proper full betaing job on this monster some way down the line, but for now picking out typos is better left to the later polishing stages. (Unless of course it really has gotten so bad you can't make sense out of what I'm trying to say, which would be your cue to bash me over the head a few times and remind me that the whole world can see what I'm posting here, and I might want to pay a bit more attention. >.>)

Monday was a public holiday, which was awesome apart from the bit where it meant one extra day without even limited Internet access during work hours. *twitches slightly* I shall have to try to get the rest of chapter 29 done by Friday to catch up a bit - it's mostly edited already, so it should be doable. (...and now I notice that I'm not even seriously hoping we'll have our net connection woes sorted out by then anymore. The delays just go on and on. ><)

Correction on the ETA for part 27 - [livejournal.com profile] k_chan009 (who is now conveniently only five minutes away from us since our move) has been wonderful enough to let us invade her house on Sunday morning and hijack her Internet connection. <3 So part 27 goes up one day earlier than I was counting on~

Still no Internet connection from home, posting from work again. In theory one more week is supposed to be the longest they could take to get our connection sorted out, in practice... *gnaws fingernails*

In the meantime, that new chapter certain people were clamoring for after the sort-of-cliffhanger of the last one is done - and even back on the old chapter-a-week schedule for once! Though I make no promises that people will find it any less frustrating that the previous. Or a good few of the ones still to come. I mentioned how we're moving into the final arc now, yes? Suffice to say it's going to be that kind of ending. And that is all I will say on the matter.

Posting sneakily from work again just to get this chapter up. Something of a dialogue-heavy installment this time around - lots of blather to get through, but this should be the last chapter like this before we're back to the action again in a big way. I'm actually getting to close enough to the end of this at last that I've got a rough estimate of about how many chapters there are left to go (though the answer there is 'still a good few yet').

rallamajoop: (I so totally can)
Somewhere in the middle of all the running around sorting out moving-related stuff this week, I had a birthday. Proper celebrations are going to be delayed this year until things calm down (needless to say) but I got to go out to dinner with my family to mark the occasion at least, so at least I get to feel remembered. ^^; Thanks also to everyone who wished me a happy birthday via online channels especially the ones who did so via email and whom I completely forgot to reply to in the busy couple of days that followed. And lots of love go especially to [livejournal.com profile] saqra for drawing Sol/Ky birthday fanart just for me. <3

Right now, we're hoping to have a combined house warming/birthday party the weekend after next - it may depend how organised the place is at that stage. Speaking of moving, the official date to lug the bulk of the furniture across and set up properly has been set for next Saturday. Still tons of packing to do between now and then, but the bulk of the phoning around for power/gas/etc is done about we're making decent headway with the furniture situation. Got to experience Ikea's extra giant new Perth store yesterday in all it's airport-scale glory, but I'm sure we'll be back again once we've moved in properly and have had time to really figure out everything we're still missing around the place.

On the writing front, the next chapter of Ghost Stories is going to take a little longer than I expected - not so much because it's giving me trouble or I don't have time to finish it, but because earlier this week I got hit with actual inspiration! for one of the harder scenes to come in chapters not so far ahead (and which I've been dreading having to put into words since way back when I started all this), and so editing the chapter 24 into shape got shunted down the priority list a few rungs. Hoping to get to it within a day or two though. I've also finally got my latest Guilty Gear fic back from my beta reader and only needing a few edits before it can be posted (also put off on account of the need to write out that Ghost Stories scene before inspiration left me again) and a piece of Discworld fanfic in the works (which I have told myself I was going to work on just about every evening for the last two weeks, hahaha ><) just for something a bit different. Come to think of it, I should really ask for betaing volunteers for that last one while I'm here. Anyone?

With a little luck, I can probably hope to get at least the first two of those fic uploaded in the next week or so, considering how very close to finished they are already. But considering that we'd probably have to be very lucky to get our Internet connection at the new place sorted out without any trouble, after this week, all bets may be off for a while. If I vanish from the Internet for a bit, at least you'll know why.

Meanwhile, I keep planning out all these posts I want to make about Crisis Core and the new xxxHOLiC episodes and everything and then I keep not finding time to write them. Oh well. Maybe next week. Or the week after that...
rallamajoop: (Watanuki)
A week and a half late on this chapter - oh man, I was not counting on this taking so long. >.> I've had a pretty good run on this story so far, but this chapter kicked my arse - which I was expecting, but not quite on this scale. This would be what happens when you finally get to scenes you've been building towards for pretty much the whole damn story (bound to be a few more of those to come now I'm getting towards the end of the story, but I'll just have to take it as it comes on that front).

On the upside, in that extra week this thing grew to twice the length of most of the chapters I've posted so far, so, er, maybe I can claim it as equivalent to two chapters? Thanks go to [livejournal.com profile] lunargeography for looking over this part for me and - well, mostly just telling me I didn't need to worry so much about how it had turned out in the end. The part to follow is coming along with much less fuss so far, which is a great relief.

Other parts: The original ficlets, Plot notes, Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, Part 8, Part 9, Part 10, Part 11, Part 12, Part 13, Part 14, Part 15, Part 16, Part 17, Part 18, Part 19, Part 20, Part 21, Part 22, Side Story 1

A little late this week, what with giant cons chewing up my weekend. Bit of a tricky chapter too - we're back in the present finally, but at the moment that means I'm finally into the build up for one of those rather more important story events and next week's only going to be even more so...
