(You're getting these in multiple comments because I'm responding at breaks during work and not trusting auto-save)

Did they actually announce it explicitly? I've only seen a couple of episodes of Girl from UNCLE, and I can't remember whether anything was said or not. I remember Moonglow sort of implied it, but I'm not sure if it was stated outright.

I picked up the Girl from UNCLE first season but haven't watched it yet, and don't remember a thing from it way back when. I thought I'd gotten the 'first female agent' from Moonglow. But I might have to rewatch it to be certain. It's possible it's just fanon firmly entrenched.

((Side note, I believe that's also the only point Uncle actually partners anybody, at least in the first few seasons, and it was special circumstance. All the fanon fics of "official partners" I just keep scratching my head over. Even for as often as Illya and Napoleon worked together, they were apart just as often.))

But UNCLE has so many women in the office first season - all the extras wander about with guns and training, they go to other offices and there are more women there, they're so useful and needed on assignments... I can't really think that Uncle doesn't have women field agents

There's more women in Uncle, actually, than most of the shows on tv nowadays.

I'm pretty sure it must have been. I wouldn't be surprised if the whole reason Boris Ingster started using the name again when he took over the show was because it had already been used for three different women back in Season 1, so why not revive it for the Chapman/Craig double-up scene? If it wasn't an in-joke already, I'm sure it was after.

;D They did have fun with the series! I think that's one of the things that comes through with it - it was serious, but it was fun, and they invited everybody to join in with both parts. (At least for the first two seasons, heh.)

(I recently wrote a brief gag into a fic I'm working on where "Wanda" is the official code-name UNCLE uses for every female staff member whose voice THRUSH might hear over the radio, to hide their identities. And if I ever get around to writing my daemon!AU, she is totally getting a chameleon.)

{snicker} That's perfect!! And a great explanation. Explains everything about the Wandas. ^_^
