Quick and dirty Supanova report
I am officially having a vastly inconsistent year for GG fic. I've spent the whole year thus far on and off working on the first part of my time travel fic and it's still not quite done - and then last week I got bitten by a completely new idea and had 6000 words written by Saturday, and now only needing a few final post-betaing tweaks before I can post it. Inspiration being what it is, these facts are probably not unconnected.
In other not-unconnected facts (whoa, segue!) Perth Supanova, the most commercial of our annual cons, was on the weekend before last, but due to that burst of fic writing I hadn't gotten around to saying anything about it. Brief report and cosplay photos under the cut.
To start with Saturday: Thanks to a last minute change in guests, we got Summer Glau this year, which of course meant that we had to get out the Firefly costumes again.

Lisa now has her Kaylee-layercake-hoopskirt signed by both Jewel Strait and Summer Glau, and we've been joking that if the rest of the cast ever show up in Perth, she could end up with autographs all the way around the edge. *g*
We'd opted not to go in the cosplay comp this year, as all the costumes we were bringing were recycled and it just wasn't quite worth standing in another line for two hours waiting for our turn. Lisa was judging the Madman nationals comp this year - which was, by the time
velithya and
twinkl33 had shown up, pretty much a matter of figuring out who was in second and third place. (The less said about some of the other entrants the better... so, uh, yeah, let's not talk about them.)
Saturday was, however, a day of standing in far too many queues. We had to queue to get in, queue to pay for autographs and photos, queue for photos, queue for autographs... it got a bit old. Sunday, by contrast, was a day of doing nothing much in particular, and it was awesome.
For Sunday, we recycled a couple of costumes from Wai-con - Ky Kiske for me, and Lina Inverse for Lisa.

We got photographed a lot that day. As in, crossing a room without getting stopped and asked if someone could take a photo of us several times on the way was a rare achievement. It wasn't like we were ever really in a hurry though, so let the record stand that I have no complaints about this, it was all terrifically flattering (even if we were pretty sure most of the people photographing us had no idea who we were supposed to be).
Midway through the day we ran into
_drayke, cosplaying princess Marth from Fire Emblem/Smash Brothers Brawl, and
velithya, wearing the awesome red coat she picked up in Japan, and we all spent a while wandering around the various vendor stalls and posing for even more photos together - most of them still from people who probably had no idea who we were meant to be (and as
_drayke pointed out, likely had the vague idea we were all characters from the same series).
Like many cons, this also turned out to be a chance to catch up with a bunch of various friends of hours who we only really see at cons. This time, this included a very talented comic artist we met at Swancon last year (and sadly couldn't get to come to PenCafe because of transport problems, and who's contact details must have fallen out of my pocket during the con sometime because I cannot for the life of me find them now, argh >_<) who tipped me off that she'd done some art for some promotional bookmarks at the Quality Comics stall which was highly relevant to my interests. :3

They were giving these away for free. I must remember to go buy more comics from them sometime soon.
Speaking of Deadpool, I'm pretty sure there were at least four different Deadpool cosplayers around over the weekend, including one in bright green sneakers (Deadpool cosplay: If you can't get it perfectly right, get it enthusiastically wrong!), and another with a Headpool on a stick. I managed to grab a third one for a couple of photos in what must be one of the more unlikely crossovers ever.

Then suddenly, our match was rudely interrupted!

Fortunately, with
_drayke around I had another white-coated, sword-weilding, occasional-tiara-wearing fighting game character on hand to call in for emergency reinforcements.
"So, are you all from the same series?" (Admit it, you would so buy this fighting game if we were.)
And I knew I could count on Marth - after all, he'd already won one notable match that day.

After that, it was off to watchthe John Robertson show the cosplay competition for the day - which actually had a surprising number of really good acts. Particularly memborable was the girl who dressed as the Companion Cube (argh, why didn't we get any photos? She was awesome!) who brought cake and ate it with John up on stage, and the John cosplayer. Yes, people are now cosplaying John - and even doing it well! (We totally knew him before he was famous, did I mention that? Because we totally did. XD)
As awesome as it was to get to meet Summer Glau, I'd have to say the second day was the highlight of the con. For once, there was no stall to mind, no cosplay competition to stress about, and no queues to wait in, and even if all we did was hang around with friends, browse stalls and pose for photos, we had a fun, relaxing day doing it.
Also, I wasn't freezing my arse off in a short skirt, which is always a plus.
