RE: Firefly: things everyone in fandom has told you already, but which I feel the need restate
Since the movie's coming out in a couple of months, my sister and I finally got around to watching all fourteen episodes of Firefly last week. By this stage I think we must have already ranted to... perhaps half of you? about our shared reactions to this show, so I'll sum up my overall impression in brief here:
OMFG they fsking CANCELED this show?!?
I mean, this is the show that *Mum* - the one who doesn't get science fiction at all, who never really got much out of Star Wars or LotR or any of the other classics - came in to watch with us whenever she caught us in the middle of an episode - even joined in with our communal grumbling about the insanity of American television network executives once we finished it. Watching Firefly has been one of those rare experiences like finding one of those stories you've wanted to see for ages but didn't think actually existed - it's dark and it's violent and it's cute and it's fun and it has nine of the most engaging characters I've seen on screen in a good while and if you haven't seen it already? Seriously, it is worth tracking down.
The movie comes out end of September. We'll be counting down.

"OH GOD WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE WHO'S FLYING THIS THING?!!"
I've seen a userpic floating around that someone has that shows most of the crew one by one with chinese characters next to their name, and the last frame just has "Firefly: teaching people to swear in Chinese since 2000" (or whenever the show came out) :D I think it's /awesome/.
I don't have a firefly icon, however I have firefly keywords! Thus, Petra will have to do, as she is really just a more powerful, more psychotic version of River :D

Have you seen the movie trailer? (up at the official site if not (http://www.serenitymovie.com)) There's another great quote along those lines mid way through.
I've heard that the actual pronunciation of the Chinese parts on Firefly is so bad even native Chinese speakers can't make sense out of it. It is a truly inspired way to slip the bad language under the censors though.
Me personally, I'm being tempted to make a "My fandom can kill you with its brain" icon. Curse my terminally limited icon slots!

Yeah, only about five times :P I can't WAIT.
Indeed! They do say non-swearwords in Chinese sometimes, from memory Mal buys a drink at some stage. But the concept of using Chinese fits very well with a futuristic world - isn't it the most spoken language in the world at the moment? :D

I guess you will just have to addict me to Firefly when I get back from Seattleno subject
Doesn't it just? *g* We don't know yet whether it follows on from the series or works as some sort of AU, but it looks like watching the series first is neither a bad idea nor really prerequisite.
I guess you will just have to addict me to Firefly when I get back from SeattleSadly, all we can do to spread the addiction is offer encouragement and point you in the direction of a good DVD rental place - we don't actually have access to the DVDs or anything useful like that. They are so totally on this year's Christmas list though

I've watched a couple of the missing eps and they so rock and we only have a few episodes on the computer .
Apparently the screening in Innaloo is already sold out for the opening night*sigh*
