As usually happens when it comes to me and con reports I am already more than a month late in posting about this year's Supanova, so I'll cut right to the chase regarding how the Saturday went this year: we went and won the Perth heat of the Madman Cosplay Championships.

We were not expecting to win. Short of WCS, the Madman comp is the biggest cosplay competition run anywhere in Australia, and to illustrate just how high the standard can be here is a picture of the contestant who came third in the final last year. Meanwhile, there's us, entering with the same Birth By Sleep costumes we wore to Wai-con on a whim based largely on a cracked-out skit idea conceived in the car late one night on our way home from a lot of karaoke.

Fig 1: As you can see, this was a very serious skit performed by very serious people.

Turned out the judges loved it. What can I say, it was immensely flattering to hear our names called out as the winners.

Madman live streams all their cosplay events, so for once good quality skit video was very easy to come by.

If you keep watching, you'll also get to see [livejournal.com profile] velithya and [livejournal.com profile] twinklee up second with their skit, which got them a wildcard entry to join us at the finals. \o/

Unfortunately missing from the live stream of the event were the backing videos that accompanied everyone's skits (other states have a video screen at the back of the stage, ours has it off to the side where it's nearly impossible for the cameraman to get it into the shot. Go figure). But you can download our our video here if you're curious - the skit mostly works without it, but you get to see where all those moves we're borrowing came from in-game, and who I'm actually supposed to be D-Linking with there at the end. Also sadly missing is the sound of the audience cheering louder and louder with each new gimmick we pulled out. Performing was an absolute blast that day.

Of course, having got this far now we've got to find a way to top that for the finals. But despite how much winning may have taken us by surprise, suffice to say our plans are coming along very nicely. *g*

Finally, thanks go to [livejournal.com profile] yiji_chan for all her help restyling my wig, to [livejournal.com profile] drayke_ for all his help backstage and providing a third voice for our skit, and to [livejournal.com profile] chisathechi who came out to do an impromptu photoshoot with us afterwards. I wasn't going to post any extra photos since I've already done a picspam post for these costumes and we're still planning a proper photoshoot later, but [livejournal.com profile] chisathechi got some great shots that day.
