(no subject)
May. 31st, 2004 11:14 pmIn the beginning, there was the question. A question which would have baffled many of our best minds: Just how does one follow an inexplicably popular space western with a soundtrack largely focused on jazz music?
The answer: With a samurai series with hip hop!
…hence yet again proving my theory, perhaps once and for all this time, that no matter how utterly unlikely, bizarre, whacked out the idea; there is still someone, somewhere out there who can make it work. This occasionally disturbs me. Also oddly reassuring though.
In summary, on Saturday night I got to see the first episode of SamuraiBebop Champloo.
Now lately, I’ve become somewhat suspicious of series which hook me on episode one, since three out of the last four that fit that bill went on to lose all of my interest by around episode five. I hated the first episode of Cowboy Bebop so much that I very nearly wound up avoiding the rest of the show (yeah, mock at will, but that series did take a little while to get going). And a few aspects of this new one still have me feeling slightly dubious, chiefly the opening theme (English language rap music? The hell?), the lead female (admittedly Faye Valentine is a lot to live up to), the idea that they’re going to wind up wandering the countryside searching for a samurai who smell of sunflowers (though that could be well be worth it just for the image of them wandering around sniffing everyone they pass). Having said that, if the episodes left to come are half as much fun as episode one, I am going to enjoy this series.
And that’s certainly enough said on the subject.
(Just because this amused me immensely)
