In the beginning, there was the question. A question which would have baffled many of our best minds: Just how does one follow an inexplicably popular space western with a soundtrack largely focused on jazz music?

The answer: With a samurai series with hip hop!

…hence yet again proving my theory, perhaps once and for all this time, that no matter how utterly unlikely, bizarre, whacked out the idea; there is still someone, somewhere out there who can make it work. This occasionally disturbs me. Also oddly reassuring though.

In summary, on Saturday night I got to see the first episode of Samurai Bebop Champloo.

Now lately, I’ve become somewhat suspicious of series which hook me on episode one, since three out of the last four that fit that bill went on to lose all of my interest by around episode five. I hated the first episode of Cowboy Bebop so much that I very nearly wound up avoiding the rest of the show (yeah, mock at will, but that series did take a little while to get going). And a few aspects of this new one still have me feeling slightly dubious, chiefly the opening theme (English language rap music? The hell?), the lead female (admittedly Faye Valentine is a lot to live up to), the idea that they’re going to wind up wandering the countryside searching for a samurai who smell of sunflowers (though that could be well be worth it just for the image of them wandering around sniffing everyone they pass). Having said that, if the episodes left to come are half as much fun as episode one, I am going to enjoy this series.

And that’s certainly enough said on the subject.

Odd fact for the day: against virtually all other known evidence, it really doesn’t seem to take much to make for a good day.

Given the fact that I’ve come down with my annual a cold and had to drive into uni on Saturday morning in attempt to finish a project requiring the use of a piece of software which is not only not accessible outside the university but also one of the most frustrating things I’ve had to deal with in ages (and since I’ve got a degree in Getting Frustrated With Computers with a minor in How Not To Design An Interface, that says a fair bit) I wasn’t really expecting to have much to enjoy on Saturday. Strangely though, it turns out that the CWR computer lab on a morning when there’s just enough time left on a project that people are showing up but aren’t that worried about it yet isn’t too bad a place to be. Particularly when some of them bring barbecue shapes and/or timtams and are happy to chat (mostly when they’re stuck and you’re ahead of them, but hey, that goes both ways). I really quite like the environmental engineering department.

Add new releases of chapters of a couple of manga series I’m developing unhealthy obsessions with, plus extra dosage of coolness in this weeks Naruto chapter, and things take another turn upwards. Throw in an email from Tim Powers (who liked the other of my stories too! Squee!) and the day is now distinctly above average. Finish with an episode of a certain new samurai series, and all complaints are nullified.

Also, advance warning: there appears to be some sort of extended Naruto rant in the works over here. Obsession can be a scary thing.

I'm finding the same thing with the multimedia labs at Uni. Working alongside people with popcorn is cool ^_^

Your Jap talk was great today! ^_^ Are you downloading Champloo? Because I have been told to see it at all costs, but I have also been told that it's been licensed, and I can't find it anywhere... :(

^^ Thanks. Yours was too, even given that I'm probably heavily biased due to a certain snigger inducing bit involving たくさん びしょうねん or some such thing X). Just have to hope the tutor agrees with us, ne? Also, is it just me, or was there some sort of creepily widespread semiconscious desire to see Troy making its way around our class today?

Sadly, not downloading Samurai Champloo, JAFWA takes credit for showing me episode one. Clearly there must be fansubs out there somewhere, licensed or not, but I haven't seen them on the web either. I don't think many episodes are out yet anyhow, it was only supposed to have started a week or two ago. I can only guess how much overtime the hype-machine must've been doing lately.

*grins* Go the last minute additions! ^_^ /Tell/ me about it! /And/ we had all the people discussing how cold it was. I suppose given the context of the talk, there was bound to be /some/ similarity... (although there was that one group that decided to see Harry Potter instead... Talia-san-tachi, I think.)

Ah, right. I might have to gack it off [livejournal.com profile] amei or something. Yeah, a week ago was when my friendslist started going bonkers over it. :P
