Even if he is still having terrible trouble convincing himself that he's going to get to keep this family this time, the poor boy. Kurogane might just say "I'm off to tell the Diet Building and the Tower there's a new hostile gang in the area." But he wouldn't need to go as far as to add "not that I'd usually bother, but now it's personal," because the others would know perfectly well.
Watanuki may even have almost had in mind some sort of weird exchange thing, where if he didn't take the bullet he hadn't paid the price for Doumeki not getting hit. However you look at it though, at least it's obvious his whole idea was that he didn't want Doumeki getting hit, and it was only afterwards he had to come up with a good excuse for why. Very sweet, and in one of those non-mushy ways that are always my favourite.
