rallamajoop: (Guilty Gear)

Thanks to Nicovideo, I'm gradually working my way through the story mode from Overture via gameplay vids. Most of the scenes I've seen so far are ones I'd already seen thanks to all those screenshots, but it's still completely worth it to see the full animated version with all the gaps filled in. I've been posting this sort of stuff straight to the [livejournal.com profile] guilty_gear comm lately, but this is mostly rambling, commentary and general impressions, so I'll leave it as a personal journal thing.

Characters
So far, between his new voice and the way he's been interacting with the other characters so much more than usual, Sol doesn't quite feel like the Sol we know. The voice isn't terrible - I'm sorta getting used to it, but I loved his old one and I'm still missing it. The really surprising thing about Sol is how much he must have mellowed out in the few years since we last saw him. I'm willing to put this down to deliberate character development rather than sloppy characterisation, but when we still don't know quite what happened in the gap (presumably we'll get a GGXXX to fill that in eventually) it's pretty startling at first. The big change can basically be brought down to his interaction with Sin - and it really doesn't matter how much time I might've spent coming up with bizarre theories to explain it, it's still really strange to see Sol being that friendly with anyone. Of course, he's still Sol - so what I mean by 'friendly' is that he answers *some* of Sin's questions, talks to him voluntarily, has only told him to shut up once or twice and doesn't seem irritated by his presence. He's been relatively patient with Izuna too. Considering that most of his interaction with characters in past canon sources suggested he'd rather get into a fight than have a conversation with just about anyone, that's quite a shift. Even when he was hanging around with Axl in the GGX drama CDs he gave me the impression he was putting up with company only under sufferance. Really makes me curious as to what else has happened in the parts of the story we're missing.

Ky, on the other hand, is exactly the same old Ky we all know and love (and I cannot begin to express how happy this is making me). This new kingship suits him so well that I'm just about prepared to suggest that those few years he spent in the International Police after the Holy War ended were a big career error, and *this* is the job he should've been doing all along. Although it probably doesn't hurt that the people he's got working for him never seem to change very much. The respect he gets has always been pretty much unconditional.

So, moving on to the new characters. Guilty Gear has always been known for it's fantastic and bizarre cast, and I'm pleased to report that going by impressions so far, they haven't lost their touch. I'm liking Sin every bit as much as I expected. He's very talkative, confident and optimistic, and clearly doesn't find Sol the least bit intimidating. He asks Sol a lot of questions, though he doesn't always get answers. Although he comes across as young and naive, he's surprisingly well spoken (and associates himself quite strongly with an obscure Indian god of weather and war, going by his battle opening speeches) and I get the impression he must be pretty bright. As for his adjectives thing, he's already complained loudly that there was nothing but rabbits (specifically, three different types of rabbits he described as 'every day rabbits, hole digging rabbits and wild rabbits') to hunt where he and Sol were camping, decided Sol's new Servants are very Avant Guard and called Izuna sadistic - the last two in English. But more on him at the end when I get to the speculation parts.

I've been liking Izuna too. It's hard to know how to describe him without being able to list off specific quotes, but he's one of those characters who's got both a serious and a playful side to him. He's certainly friendly enough, though still pretty mysterious at this point. We haven't seen much of Valentine yet, but from what I've seen she comes across as a very cute, very focused, near emotionless killer. Sol and Sin seem to intrigue her, but she mostly just sees them as something that's getting in her way.

Story
There are 21 chapters to the campaign/story mode, numbered #0-#20. Most have a mix of cutscenes and parts where the player gets to fight, with the exception of chapter 1, which is all cutscenes. There's a text prologue to each chapter, though I can't make much out of any of them beyond the odd familiar name. I'd kill for proper translations of everything - so often I can understand just enough to know that the bits I don't understand are bound to be important. So far, videos for #0-#4 have been uploaded, plus a couple of scattered bits from later on which are more frustrating than anything else because I don't want to ruin the story for myself by watching them out of sequence. At any rate, the fact you take on That Man in combat in this game isn't much of a secret anymore.

For general impressions, I doubt a lot of work has gone into putting the story mode together beyond doing the voices and building the extra stages. All the character models we've seen so far have been the standard Masters and their assorted Servants, and when the characters move, most of the actions are the same motions which would have been programmed in for standard combat usage (walking around and attacking and such). Still, when we do get a bit of original movement, I'm quite impressed by how fluid the animation is - even if the character models aren't exactly top notch, they're being used well. Overall, much like in the GG fighters, the story mode is more of an extra while the focus of the game is on the versus combat modes, so it doesn't feel like they're just being cheap about it.

(For some reason, at this point it seemed like a good idea to go on to summarise the story I've seen so far. It got lengthy - you should probably be used to that from me by now. >.>)

Chapter 0 is your basic tutorial on how to move around, attack, lock on - that kind of thing. It starts with Sol and Sin out by a campfire somewhere, with Sin complaining that it's high time they moved on somewhere more interesting (see comment about rabbits above). To get through the playable part, you play as Sol and have to follow Sin's instructions until you've gone through the basic controls. Before long, Sol gets thoroughly fed up with this and punches Sin, and a proper battle between them starts. Once you win, Sin declares it must be about time to call it a night, and collapses where he stands. This would be where Sol gets the first of those mysterious headaches he's been having. From here, the scene changes to two of Ky's soldiers in an underground tunnel, checking Gears which have been magically sealed since the war. Just as we saw in the screenshots, one of the Gears vanishes in front of their eyes.

By chapter 1, we're in Illyuria (apparently this is the official romanisation - sounds like about how they pronounce it too) castle, and two of Ky's Convict Hammer Servants are bringing him the news. I'm cheating a bit with translations here, since a lot of this scene was in the English TGS info pack, but he's told sealed Gears have been vanishing all over the place. His response (TGS info again) is along the lines of "It's true this matter is disturbing, but so far, there's no harm done." There's a lot of other talk which sounds interesting, but understanding it is beyond my feeble fangirl Japanese. They're still talking about it when suddenly there's a crash, and one of Ky's regular soldiers comes running in to report that they're under attack by an unknown force (Valentine, obviously), and being overwhelmed. Ky quickly sends his Convict Hammers out to join the fight, and then utters one of those beautifully vague Japanese phrases to his remaining soldier which tend to get translated along the lines of "and we should do That Thing as well". Fortunately, his soldier knows what he's on about well enough to be shocked that Ky would go that far - but Ky is sure, he's already guessed how big a deal this is going to be, and is bringing in the big guns early. (Gee, now just what could they be talking about? ^_~)

Through chapter 1 we had credits showing up on screen, and at the end we get the title to show this is where the prologue part officially ends. On to chapter 2, and Sol and Sin are in a new area - a country called 'Toriora' - and Sin's found that now infamous Wanted poster and is rather interested to see it's got his Oyaji's face on it. Sol isn't paying much attention, but has him read it out (which Sin does in horribly accented English - "Wanted: Dead or Alive") - and tells Sin it's a message to him from Ky. However, they don't get to talk about it much before a group of enemy Servants and some kind of Master Ghost show up in front of them. The Servants are quite chatty - they've got mechanical sounding female voices and don't seem to know where they are at first, though they do talk about the key they're looking for. I'm still a bit suspicious about whether these are really Valentine's Servants or someone else's - they certainly appear to be working for her, but none of them are listed in her regular Tribe for playable purposes. It's possible they're a kind of boss-mode-only deal, though they don't look tough enough to be worth it.

There's also a whole mess of Captures appearing from a nearby Ghost, which reappear as fast as Sol and Sin can take them down, and even Sin's magic doesn't help. One of the Servants uses a binding spell on Sin's legs, essentially disabling him (Sol tells him to dispel it, but Sin can't). So this is where they start hearing Izuna's voice, and we're back to the tutorial part of the game, where Sol learns about Ghosts, Master Ghosts and all the rest of it. Once he's finally taken all the Servants down, he near collapses - some kind of reaction to using the new magic, but by then Sin's legs are free again and he charges after the few escaping straggler Servants remaining and takes them down (giving the player some practice with the Blast Drive function in the process).

I was initially a bit concerned about how they were going to handle the tutorial aspect of the game with respect to Sol - but that's been working out better than I thought it would. See, half the purpose of the campaign mode is to act as a tutorial, but normally when a game includes something like this, you're playing as a character who is themselves a beginner. In Overture, however, you're mostly playing as Sol, who must be over 180 at this point, has been bounty hunting professionally for a century or more, is a former scientist who was closely involved with Gear project since magic was first discovered... there's seriously not much left he doesn't already know. So seeing those early screenshots of him having to listen and follow all Izuna's instructions to make any sense out of how to deal with Valentine's Servants looked sorta wrong.

Fortunately, in context, Sol's not nearly so out of his depth as he first seemed. Once Izuna starts explaining he catches on fast. It sounds very much like he's familiar with the kind of magic behind the Master Ghost system in principle, just hasn't used it himself before - referring to it as a 'Soul Sinker' a couple of times (while I'm still a bit hazy on the translations, I think they're saying that the Master's soul is linked to the Master Ghost to allow them to use it to summon Servants etc, and that's also why destroying the MG can kill the Master as well). While he needs some help with a few details, Sol awakens the power needed to create his own Master Ghost much faster than Izuna ever expected. Post battle, he finds Izuna quickly and guesses where he's from right away - the still mysterious 'Backyard'-place mentioned in Izuna and Dr Paradigm's bios. Sin wants to know what they're talking about here, and with a bit of convincing, manages to get Sol to explain it - and off we launch into another frustratingly long section which I can't understand. It seems this 'Backyard' is some sort of other world, involving magic and having been around for at least the past century, but I'm pretty sure there's going to be a lot more to it than that. Ah, what I'd give for subtitles.

Chapter 3 is pretty short. It seems Izuna has teleportation among his talents - maybe something similar to what Faust uses - which saves the three of them a good bit of travelling time on their way to Illyuria. On the way they're required to pass through another area which appears to be Izuna's home turf, as it's full of his Servants. However, barely have our heroes arrived when Izuna's Servants attack them. It's pretty obvious now why Izuna accused Valentine of brainwashing his friends in the scene when they finally meet her. Sin, Sol and Izuna now have to get to the other end of the area and through a barrier to get out again - but as usual, Servants are needed to take the barrier down, and leading them through all Izuna's brainwashed friends wouldn't be too easy. The purpose of this little tutorial bit is to show of a function that lets you pick up several of your Servants and store them in your item slots, and having done so, Sol charges through at high speed, drops off his (ordinarily much slower) Servants at the other end and has them take the barrier down, Izuna and Sin following behind him.

In the fourth chapter, Sol, Sin and Izuna reach Illyuria at last - and find Valentine waiting for them. Her Servants have reported to her that they're coming well before they show up, and we have a brief little scene at the start of her standing on a rooftop talking to herself about them. She mentions those headaches - which Sol's had twice now, and has again right before she appears - though I'm not entirely sure whether she's had one herself or whether she's just repeating what Sol said. So, finally, we're up to that scene which was helpfully ripped back on the first evening after the game came out - transcript here (with helpful additions by [livejournal.com profile] sethyhide in the comments to fill in the gaps I wasn't sure about). Unsurprisingly, this leads into Sol's first proper battle against Valentine, but after you win, she disappears again. Put out as the good guys are by this, Sol tells them to hurry on towards the castle.

Chapter five isn't up, except a brief video of the battle part and the short scene which went up with the Valentine one. There are a couple more vids from later on, but I really don't want to watch them out of order - I'm having enough trouble following everything as it is. There has been a lot more the characters have said about Illyuria, the Backyard and the whole Master Ghost system, but I'm probably going to have to wait for the official English release to know exactly what.

There's been next to no information about Sin yet that we didn't know already. When Sol tells him the poster is a message from Ky, Sin's response is along the lines of "Ky... the king?" which is curious because doesn't make it sound like he knows Ky himself, despite the fact he's got Ky's signature move mapped to his A+X combination. Still, it's not exactly conclusive one way or the other. (I'd probably know more if I was more certain about what Sin and Sol have been saying about Illyuria, but I'm not). The 'Sin is a Gear' theory is looking pretty likely though. Valentine's Servants describe both Sol and Sin as 'beyond human', and in any case, the fact Sin's managing to keep up with Sol at all says a lot. The fact he seems quite young for his apparent age and intelligence would also make a lot of sense if he'd grown from infant to adult in about the same time as Dizzy did. (Actually, there may well be definitive answers in those later chapter videos people have been uploading, but if anyone has watched those, please don't tell me what's in them yet.)

Overall, I'm a little concerned they may be introducing more new plot elements than they can handle in a story like this, but I've still been genuinely enjoying it so far. I only hope I'll be able to see the next couple of chapters soon - I really don't think I'm going to last until the official release rolls around when I'm already this far in.

*bushes and hungs her head in shame* I'm sorry that I spoiled ;_; ... I always have to make something wrong y_y

^^; It's okay, I just skimmed over that paragraph. Just wanted to make sure no-one else did.

Yeah it'd be a tad strange if Sin didn't know him ... Judgeing from his reaction what he sees Ky sealed ... >.>;

Well, I suppose Sin could just have been generally more easily worried by stuff like that... but I still don't know where else he could've learned his 'R.T.L.' and I don't see how he *can't* be some kind of Ky clone. So it's all very curious.

Wow, I find that incredibly surprising that Sin doesn't know Ky personally, especially considering the mass of similarities and the fact he seems to be using his royal guard... An interesting turn indeed...

But I am so happy to hear Ky is the same ol'Ky he's always been. Still not liking Sol's voice, but the fact he's chilled out a little with people makes me smile. Izuna intrigues me... Here's hoping they can actually tie all this plot together in the end :D;

Well, I'd hurry to say it's not exactly conclusive one way or the other - and I've since found a vid of Sin reciting one of his opening speeches where he refers to himself as having 'the same lightning as Ky,' which sends a rather different message. It's always possible they're deliberately trying to make it ambiguous at this point in the plot, but it did seem odd that Sin would need to double check with Sol which Ky he was talking about. Maybe Sol just doesn't bring Ky up very often? It's so hard to know when only half the dialogue makes any sense to me. ^^;

Still not liking Sol's voice, but the fact he's chilled out a little with people makes me smile.

I'm kinda wondering whether he's basically been forced to chill out a bit after spending the last couple of years with Sin. It's pretty amazing just to hear him referring to Ky by name at last. XD

I would love to help out with translations, but after encountering one problem in my first sign up attempt, I kind of gave up due to extreme laziness XD;;; If I had the game in my hands, I'd be a lot more motivated probably (oh lordy, when will be get news of an English release...?) But yes - I wouldn't be surprised if Ky is a popular name in the GG universe, what with him being a public hero of sorts :3

It's pretty amazing just to hear him referring to Ky by name at last. XD

Well Ky is... what, 26 or so now? 'Boy' and 'brat' might sound a little dated by that point XD or maybe these little changes are due to parenting - ah sacrifices~.

It's worth the effort, believe me. But if you're stuck, I did run into some general use passwords here (http://www.bugmenot.com/view/www.nicovideo.jp) which might be worth a try. The videos are quite good quality - there's just so much text that the thought of translating it kanji-by-kanji (which is pretty much what I have to do with most of the manga) is seriously daunting.

I think Ky must be about 28-29 by now, so yeah - 'boy' might be a sounding a little strange even to Sol. Still, he could probably come up with some kind of alternative if he really wanted to. I choose to take it as a good sign.
