Fun things I got to wake up to this morning: [livejournal.com profile] saqra drew me some lovely art to go with that ridiculous Sol/Ky belts idea I posted earlier this week. ♥♥♥ (Flustered chibi-Ky and sweatdropping Sol FTW!) Meanwhile, apparently the idea got to [livejournal.com profile] narazale at 3AM a few nights back and got us another version too. XD Now all I need is to find someone willing to do the doujinshi version and I'm all set. *g*

In other GG news, even though we're still not quite done with the manga, there's not too much more I can do with it right at the moment (I haven't forgotten about it, I swear! I've totally got ch. 9 almost translated, I'm just waiting for another translator to get back to me about ch. 8 >.>), so I went ahead and made a start with the next project I was going to have a crack at translating - namely the three Night of Knives drama CDs. So far I'm up to about the fifth track of the first CD (though I badly need to get [livejournal.com profile] jaseroque of the Much Better Working Japanese Skills to go back over what I've done so far and help me fill in some bits I couldn't figure out and correct all my mistakes before it'll be much use to anyone), but I keep sort of stopping to go "oh my god, when did translating get this easy? =D" No more of this fiddly messing around with bad quality scans of kanji I've never seen before, oh no - this time I've got hold of the complete Japanese script (plus the mp3's, of course), so with that + Rikai-chan, translating most lines is suddenly as easy as running the mouse over each tricky word and noting down the English version as I go *happy sigh*. The story's been really interesting so far too - I swear there's more information about Millia and Zato's relationship alone in the first scene than the whole rest of the series put together. Of course, I've also heard the reason the translator who did the other drama CDs didn't translate this one was because he didn't think so much of it, which makes me wonder if it's set to start dragging out and go downhill at some point, but for now I'm happy to wait and see.

To summarise the NoK CDs as a whole, there's one main story about the four assassin characters (Millia, Zato, Venom and Slayer, plus assorted extras) which takes up the first halves of all three CDs, and three side stories - one about two Robo-Kys, one with A.B.A. and Slayer and one about Axl and Slayer (Slayer is in these CDs a lot if you hadn't guessed). The main one is the only one I've made a proper start on translating - in brief, it's set somewhere between the end of the Holy War and when Millia left the Assassins Guild (though it doesn't actually cover either event), and seems to deal mostly with the period when Slayer first turns up again to discover what his nice little Guild has been doing with itself while he's been away, while Millia's coming to realise that she does have a way out of the Guild if she can just bring herself to take that leap. And some people get assassinated, and Zato is all smarmy and manipulative, and a lot of other stuff I haven't translated yet. *cough*

Anyway, some specifics I wanted to ramble about because I've been enjoying it that much: To begin with - sure, we all know about Venom, but if there was ever any doubt that Millia's own feelings about Zato were once something rather beyond platonic, the very first scene clears that right up. The whole scene is pillow talk - yes, she and Zato are in bed together. That said, it's very tame - you don't hear anything worse than them talking and some sheets rustling. But what really strikes me about this scene is that if this was all you had to judge them by, you could almost think Millia is the psycho here and Zato's the one with actual human feelings. It's Zato being nostalgic about mournful about some of his dead comrades, and Millia's the one being all condescending and telling him assassins don't feel that stuff, contract killers don't have a right to happiness - and yet, it seems like this must be some bizarre recent change of heart on Zato's part, because Millia makes it just as clear she believes all that stuff because he's the one who taught it to her. She loves Zato, but she's not subtle about how much she resents what he made her into. She's proud of her skills and not the least modest, but killing makes her physically ill. And yet somehow the man who made her into all that is having a moment of conscience after crawling into bed with her. It's all so beautifully twisted. I love it.

Then the next morning, Venom shows up at her door. He wants to know where Zato is, and what she's been doing to make her hair so messy, and if she realises that if she's hiding Zato in there and not telling him SHE'S GOING TO BE IN AN AWFUL LOT OF TROUBLE, BECAUSE THERE ARE RULES ABOUT THAT. (Oh, fiiine, he kept his cool better than that, but only by a little) So Millia gives in and fishes Zato out from somewhere, then goes to fix her hair or something while the other two have a bit of a chat about their latest contract. Somehow, that conversation evolves into a discussion of the political and business ramifications that the recent end of the war is going to have for an organisation of contract killers. (In a drama CD from a fighting game, no less! Oh GG, I love you so.)

On to the next scene, now they're getting ready to take on that particular contract (the prince of some unfamiliar country, for the record), which means doing a bit of recon at a royal ball. Zato points out their target to Millia, and they hang around, say some unflattering things about all the aristocrats they're sharing the room with for a bit, and generally do their best socialite impression. This ends when some random woman comes up to ask Zato to dance (and to Millia's even greater surprise, he agrees). So Millia's doing the wallflower thing alone now when some other strange gentleman comes along, introduces himself as 'Slayer' and asks her to dance.... XDDD

...okay, so she tells him she doesn't know how to dance, but the image of Millia in a ballgown dancing with Slayer is one I'm probably enjoying rather too much. *g*

Anyway, they go out on to the balcony to talk for a bit instead. Slayer drones on quite a bit about his thoughts on humanity and the younger generation, but she mostly seems to appreciate the company even if he weirds her out a bit. My favourite part of this scene is the end where Sharon gets a cameo - very brief, since of course they can't actually let us hear her talk, (that'd just be wrong!), but someone calls Slayer away, and then there's him in the background being all "Sharon? What are you upset about?" after he finally leaves that attractive blond he'd been talking to for so long behind.

The last scene I went through is the assassination itself. Zato and Venom may be there for support, but it's Millia who actually has to sneak into the prince's room late that night and do the job... only it turns out she had a surprise spectator. Slayer's doing a little 'observing' of the new generation of assassins. Naturally, Millia takes this badly, and they fight - which results in her winding up disabled on the floor, while Slayer identifies himself as a retired assassin and asks her some questions. The discovery that his Guild in it's present incarnation has been reduced from delivering justice to those above the law to taking money from anyone who can affort a contract killing doesn't particularly please him. He decides he needs to have a little chat with Zato... leaving poor Millia still barely able to stand, and with the palace guards on their way...

....aaaand that's as far as I've gotten. I probably shouldn't try and get too much further until I've had the chance to go back and edit the script so far into something usable, but it's been quite the entertaining ride so far, and I'm only, oh, a third of the way through the first disk? Plenty left to go yet. ^_^

Now I vaguely want to write a nicely twisted Millia/Zato drabble or two, but we'll see if anything comes of it. >.>

About the Xtra scanlations- I can have them to you shortly, but I need a list of who worked on each chapter so I can give proper credit for each chapter. And their emails too.

So, it'll look something like this:
Translator: Rallamajoop / your email
Raws & Text Editing: Raging Tofu / raging_tofu@yahoo.com
other job: someone else / their email

Your choice if you want your real name or a pen name for this.

Yeesh, all that stuff going on with the assassins is crazy... but yet it fits so nicely.

Gotta hand it to GG - all this drama going on is just wonderful XD

^^; Well, y'know. I really want to know what's going on in the NoK CDs, and I know lots of other fans do too, and it's pretty obvious no-one else in fandom is in any great rush to do these translations for me, so it seemed like a good project. It's good practice with me with my Japanese too. ^_^

Oh, fantastic! So far, [livejournal.com profile] jaseroque and I have jointly worked on chapters 2-5 and 7, and [livejournal.com profile] sethyhide's done 6. Though there've also been odds and ends where one team's done various checking and correcting for the other along the way, so maybe it'd be easier just to credit everyone who's worked on the project for every chapter? Not too sure. I'll have to double check with [livejournal.com profile] jaseroque about pen names/email addresses, so I'll get back to you about that.

XD It's gonna be a big job - I'm only through about a ninth of the tracks even in my quick rough version, but I think it'll be worth it if there's this much enthusiasm for seeing it done.

It's been really interesting so far. All this new stuff about their time in the Guild together fits and makes sense and all, but I never would have imagined this was how it worked. I'm looking forward to finding out where it all goes from here.

Well, this is only a bit of fangirling of the first part of the first CD - I've still got to get through the rest of the Assassin part and do proper summaries of everything. Gonna be a big job, but I think it'll be worth it.

Hn , and I though that Millia didn't accept Zato's feelings a one sided love or something ... >w< but they make a cute pairing though <3 >poor Venom D:

It does seem like Zato's more attached to her than she is to him, but events make it pretty clear part of her still does love him even if she hates him as well. Really twisted, believe me. Venom just gets the raw end of every side of the deal, poor guy.

Un , are you ... going to translate the Robo-Ky part by chance , in the future ? *sparkly eyes*

That one's probably going to be last on our list - I listened through those tracks a while back, but I could hardly make head or tail of what was going on, whereas all the other stories got me really enthused about translating them. ^^; Still, I'd definitely like to get all the tracks on all three CDs translated, whatever order it happens in.

Oh really? I wasn't under the impression any of those CDs had been translated at all, do you know who did them? Obviously, I'd love to get hold of a copy. ^_^

Okay, sorry for the slow reply here (been sick half the week and [livejournal.com profile] jaseroque managed to never be online when I thought of it otherwise) - we're both happiest being referred to under our LiveJournal names, and we've both got gmail accounts under those same names too, so that should keep things simple.

Wow. So this never got to my inbox o_O (wtf LJ?) and here I thought you were ignoring me XD

So it'll be:
Jaseroque / jaseroque@gmail.com
Rallamajoop / rallamajoop@gmail.com

right?

And am I correct in assuming Jas' role was as a translator?
Let me know if there are other people that need to be credited and I'll add them in.

Second quesiton- do you want me to just post a MU/SendSpace link for the chapter packs? (they'll be .rar) I take it you're going to host them on your website....
any info you wanna toss me on this would be helpful.

Ah, typical. LJ must have gotten slack with the comment notifications again (they've just been one big barrel of fun lately from all angles).

Anyway, all the details you've listed above are correct. I think it'd be easier to go with MU/SendSpace links for the files, at least to begin with. I'm borrowing bandwidth off a friend for that site at the moment, and I'd rather not test the limits there by offering too much in the way of large downloads. I don't think there's anything much else to add except to say that on the off chance you run into any trouble with the scripts we've done (missed panels or whatever) don't hesitate to bug us for corrections.
