Yesterday, the younger of my sisters, who is sixteen and currently out of the state visiting her boyfriend, sent us an SMS to let us know they're engaged. Yes, you read that correctly.

My immediate reaction? Well, that figures.

Can't even work up the enthusiasm to be irritated or surprised.

Edit: As of this afternoon she's back. With an engagement ring that apparantly cost more than a thousand dollars. The whole thing is stupid, but this is insane.

Much as I want to agree, I think everyone over here saw this one coming a mile off. We just hoped it wouldn't actually get to this stage. Dad was seriously suggesting we find a way to force them to break up not that long ago, though I could never see that fixing anything.

^^;;; Like I said, it's really not that big a deal. I mean, it's not like they can actually *get* married any time in the next two years or anything, it just means this whole big stupid thing they've got going has gotten that much stupider.

Well, I mean, I knew they were all with the crazy and everything, I just didn't think the crazy would actually take that particular step. I mean, yeah, they're 16, it's not like there's much point... (And forced break-ups never work. Bleeuuuaaargh.)

You haven't had to sit through her impasshioned rants about how awful it was that our parents waited until (gasp!) their thirties before having kids. She honestly wants to be married with kids before she hits 25. And all the time she's spent looking at pictures of engagement rings lately? Not especially subtle. Though I must admit, like you, I was still somehow hoping sanity would prevail.

If only we could convince Dad of that. He's being *logical* about things in that wonderful way of his (ie, thinks this whole thing is so much trouble already that it couldn't make it any worse). Still, in light of this development I think even he'll have to look for a different approach.

Scary thing is that I think even I - sad, fantasy obsessed fan-geek that I am - am more in touch with reality than she is lately.
