Only nine months late, finally I have gotten around to sorting and posting all those photos from our The World Ends With You cosplay photoshoot in Shibuya last year:
Part 1: Six overenthusiastic cosplayers take on Shibuya
Part 2: Even more locations
Part 3: Omake
Next on the to-do list, it is so very past time I got those WEWY fic of mine posted - especially considering they've now been finished and betaed for weeks and really just need a few final edits. Free time for such things has been such a limited commodity lately. >.>;
In not completely unrelated news*,
pinneagig and I are now all booked up for flights and accomodation for attending Smash this year (an anime con in Sydney about three weeks from now, for the link-phobic). We'll be running a stall there selling all her usual artwork on the Sunday - Saturday we plan to do this crazy new thing where we actually wander around and maybe even participate in the rest of the con for once.
Having been talked into cosplaying Ky around the same time those WEWY photos should have been posted** I've given myself the target of getting the costume done in time to wear it in Sydney, but it's looking thoroughly doable right now - and that would be the other thing eating up my free time around here lately. That and all the GG or CLAMP fic that's similarly overdue to be cleaned up and posted. Not to mention maybe a couple of things buried in the depths of the Cable&Deadpool kink meme... ah, new fandoms, you are so very bad for my WIP list.
* it's about travel! And cosplay! In fact, we're planning to take the WEWY costumes along for this one (because clearly they just weren't well travelled enough yet).
** NOT MENTIONING ANY NAMES

Date: 2009-07-21 07:35 am (UTC)I'm hoping to have the next part of the vampire-fic up tonight. Meant to have it up sooner, but again, C&D stuff has been horribly distracting lately. ^^; I did post the start of another GG fic in the meantime, but it seems to have been mostly ignored, owell.

I actually did read your other fic, but I left no comment because I had no idea what to say yet. I get the very strong impression that...
[maybe possible spoiler]
...Ky has been turned into a Gear. Unless those implications are just a red herring. And I'm just not sure what to think of it.
Normally, I wouldn't be interested in a Gear!Ky fic, because one of the things I like best about him is the whole "human being dealing with superhumans" aspect (for the same reason, I wouldn't normally read a superpowered!Batman fic or a bender!Sokka fic). But then, normally I avoid AUs like the plague, I can't stand them, and yet I absolute loved yours and now I'm eagerly waiting for the next chapter of your new AU fic. So it's entirely possible that I'll end up absolutely loving your Gear!Ky fic too.
So I had decided to leave feedback to that fic only after reading some more of it, I was waiting for the next chapters ^^

Date: 2009-07-21 01:44 pm (UTC)See, I thought that. I still worry I'm hardly doing him justice (no way do I watch enough bad TV for a start! XD) but I kept getting bitten by ideas that would not let go, and mostly I think I'm managing? ^^;
[RE: other fic}
Huh. Iiiinteresting, it didn't even occur to me anyone might come out of the prologue with that impression. ^^; I guess because it's kinda part of my personal canon that turning a human into a Gear would have to be a *way* more involved process than what could be done by a few doctors in a few hours (and certainly not without anyone noticing anything different about him afterwards - especially Sol) - or at least, that's been my attempt to rationalise why humanoid Gears are so rare compared to the animalistic version we see getting mass produced in the factory. Not the only way to read things though, obviously. Anyhow, in short, you're not entirely on the wrong track that something a bit fishy is going on (and I may wind up including a few AU elements in this fic which you may or may not like), but the doctors didn't have to resort to anything on the level of rewriting Ky's entire biology to save his life there, no.
(I was going to finish this by offering you a link to a fic which does turn Ky into a Gear mid way through and also happens to be one of the best fics I've ever read in this fandom, but it appears to be offline. D= I hear you on the point where him being the human in a world filled with Gears etc is an important defining feature, but I would argue it's still very possible to do good things with fic that doesn't leave him that way.)

Date: 2009-08-25 03:56 pm (UTC)I could never understand why Japanese artists make it so difficult to get to their "hottest" art. Considering how much time and effort goes into drawing, don't they want as many people as possible to look at it?
Wow, were you inspired by this picture (http://blog-imgs-27.fc2.com/e/c/h/echoesinmywell/d20.jpg) to write your vampire fic? It's so appropriate XD
And Cinderella!Ky is hilarious. Say, do you know if anybody in the GG fandom has written any of the (in?)famous "the cast as characters of a fairytale" fanfictions? I couldn't find anything like that in the mainstream fanfiction sites, but it seems like GG has a lot of great fanfictions that are hidden in obscure sites.

Date: 2009-08-26 02:58 am (UTC)It's probably more in response to the sort of people who are always running around crying 'ohnoes, there is porn on the Internet, what if a CHILD should run into it THINK OF THE CHILDREN!' etc. (Or simply an act of courtesy to make it a little harder for people to run into it by mistake. ;) Most sites make the passwords fairly easy to figure out (assuming you speak the language), and there are a lot of English-language sites that do similar things with adult-content.
On the far end, I've seen a few sites with password-protected sections containing nothing more objectionable than a bit of snuggling. I can only assume this is more about protecting the delicate constitutions of yaoi-phobic fanboys than anyone else. ;)
On a side note, I've noticed that a disappointing number of Japanese artists don't like having their art seen much at all - think of all the ones who delete old art regularly or take their whole sites down. Some of it's probably embarrassment over work they don't feel is up to standard with their newer work, but there's also a lot of bad feeling against people (especially Westerners, who have a particularly bad record with asking permission) reposting their work elsewhere on the web. Being discovered as someone who participates that actively in fandom (likely even more so when it comes to yaoi) could actually do someone's public reputation serious damage in some parts of Japan, so the paranoia about who sees their work might not be unjustified. It's pretty stupid, but it's just one of those cultural things.

Not that I can think of, there's not a lot of AU fic in this fandom, and even less that goes that far AU (there *are* a couple of comics in the Play-Do folder in the fanart I just uploaded that might be of interest to you though). Apart from the one I already linked you, I don't even know of very much in the way of fic posted on sites more obscure than ff.net. There's a woeful lack of fanfic in this fandom, good or otherwise. :/

The thing I find the most annoying is when yaoi-phobic fanboys (and fangirls!) click on fanart/fanfiction that is clearly labelled "yaoi/shounen-ai/boyXboy" and go all ZOMG SO GROSS!!!1111 YOU ARE SICK AND DELUSIONAL!!!1111111
If you hate yaoi, don't click on it. Dumbass.
There was an especially ridiculous comment on DeviantArt, about a (completely innocent and Safe For Work) comic with Ky and Sol calling each other names and then embarrassingly admitting they like each other anyway, with the author nothing something like "well, they are always at each other's throat, I thought maybe there is something more there". The comment said "THIS IS WHY FANGIRLS AND CANON DON'T MIX!!!", and another comment said "can't two guys who hate each other just hate each other!?"
Excuse me? Wasn't it Daisuke Ishiwatari himself (you know, the guy who made canon) who drew the "Hostility is akin to LOVE" picture (complete with poem)? Even if you read it as platonic love, it's still canon that Sol and Ky care for each other, what with the very subtle hints of Ky entrusting first the leadership of the Holy Order and then his own son to Sol, and Sol going after Ky in the middle of a battlefield and years later shielding him (with his body?) from machine guns. Heck, even the "anime trailer" had most of its Sol and Ky screentime about Sol rescuing Ky, like the animators said "hummm, we only have less than 30 seconds to show what their relationship is like to people who don't know Guilty Gear... I know, let's show one of them jumping off a cliff after the other and grabbing his hand!"
Sorry, I'm ranting ^^". Yaoi bashing is a big pet peeve of mine.

I don't understand any of them ;_; Curse my lack of Japanese language skills! *shakes fist*
...Plus, I'm kinda more partial to that other comic, with (Horny) Evil Overlord!Sol and Captured Knight!Ky and Little Kid!Dizzy (who beats up (daddy?) Sol and gets baby-sat by Ky) and Butler!Testament. It's a crying shame that comic is incomplete D:

^^""""""
It's a sad testament to the status of my Fandoms that, upon reading that line, I non-sarcastically thought "WFT? Woeful lack? But there are like 20 excellent fanfictions in GG Fandom! Such a high number!"
In most of my Fandoms, I'm lucky if I find one good fanfiction, let alone an excellent one, let alone twenty ;_;
There is also the case of Fandoms where the game lets you shape the character into either a bad guy or a good guy, and get alternate endings. I always shape my character into a good guy and try to get the happy ending, so then I get screwed with fanfiction because virtully all of the really good ones assume that the character is a bastard and that he got the "Congrats! You are now the Anti-Christ! Also, rocks fall and everybody die!" ending :/
Guilty Gear is actually my Fandom with the highest number of excellent fanfictions ^^"

Oh, don't apologise, those nutjobs are a big pet peeve of mine too. -_- They've got this crazy idea that they can post stupidly proportioned pics of the female characters in anatomically impossible poses as much as they like, but as soon as someone mentions the gay, they all act like they've got some kind of god-given right to a fandom with no girls in it. It's always worse in male-dominated fandoms like this one (my last few big fandoms - Kingdom Hearts and various CLAMP series - were pleasantly female-dominated by comparison).

Ahaha, really? A couple of times I've gotten into fandoms for western TV series, and the amount of good fic they get compared to what the rest of us have to live with is brain-breaking. Even most anime fandoms are better represented. In some of my past fandoms you'd see more than 20 excellent fic by one writer. Sometimes you'd get 20 good new fic posted inside a couple of weeks. You can keep reading for weeks and not run out. ;_;
I do know there are far worse represented examples, but nothing I've ever been too pinvolved in.

I actually can't think of many games fitting that description. Examples?

darkside-ky is the user who has been bashing a lot of Sol/Ky pics on DeviantArt. Ironically, he also wrote an essay where he called other GG fans "elitist" for being rude, anal and close-minded. Pot, meet Kettle.
It's always worse in male-dominated fandoms like this one (my last few big fandoms - Kingdom Hearts and various CLAMP series - were pleasantly female-dominated by comparison).
To be honest, while it is true that male-dominated Fandoms are usually much worse for slashers, I don't think that's the problem for the GG Fandom specifically.
GG has more female fans than, say, The King Of Fighters, and yet the KoF Fandom is relatively yaoi-friendly. Many KoF fanboys make light-hearted Iori/Kyo jokes, and are usually nice to fangirls. Some of the KoF fanboys in my flist even read my Iori/Kyo fanfiction, because while they don't like yaoi, they admit that the Iori/Kyo implications in the games and the extra material are pretty damn blatant, so they might as well get over it.
I hope I'm not jinxing the KoF Fandom by praising it so ^^"
On the other hand, the GG Fandom, with its larger number of fangirls, is one of the worst yaoi-bashing Fandoms I've ever been in. And I've noticed that many of the worst yaoi bashers are women.
So, yeah, I think the GG Fandom's wankery isn't really due to its being male-dominated. There is something about Guilty Gear that seems to attract a lot of nasty people of both genders.
OH IS IT EVER. ;_; Sadly, it's been like that so long I'm pretty sure the artist's never coming back to it.
Since the "inu ga yukuefumei" site is gone, I don't think there is any doubt anymore :(
...I know you have said that you have a huge WIP list and don't want to add to it, but, are you sure you won't even consider writing an AU fic like that? Horny Evil Overlord!Sol, Captured Knight!Ky, Chibi!Dizzy, Butler!Testament... That's such an awesome concept! It would be such a pity to ignore it ^^
I can translate some of the dialogue for you if you like though.
If it's not too much bother, I'd love it :D
Good porn needs a plot, tooI actually can't think of many games fitting that description. Examples?
Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call (also known as Nocturne in America), a fantastic RPG for PS2 :)
It is set in a post-Apocalyptic World (Apocalypse happens about 20 minutes after the beginning of the game; you survive it because you accidentally happen to be in the only safe place in the world when it happens, and then Lucifer passes by and turns you into a demon with a human soul for crap and giggles), and it's main character is a "silent protagonist" type, so you can "customize" his personality. Among other things, you can have him either become a Savior or the Antichrist (seriously), and there are six alternate endings.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucifer%27s_Call
This game is not really for the average gamer. It has heavy shades of gray (it's implied in a sub-quest that God is kind of evil, and Lucifer is kind of a Freedom Fighter; plus, you can actually choose to commit genocide), some of the endings are extremely depressing (you can get a happy ending, sort of, but it's very tricky, you have to answer correctly to two certain questions), the "Labyrinth of Amala" subquest is insane (although, thankfully, it's not necessary to beat the game, just to get one specific ending; so, if you are not interested in that ending in particular, you can just skip that subquest entirely), and some bosses are extremely hard.

He'd be almost entertaining if he wasn't so persistent, he just doesn't get it (probably can't stand the idea he might be *dumdumdum* playing the game as a character who might not be 100% heterosexual). Haven't seen the essay, but it sounds like the icing on the cake of stupidity.

That's interesting, actually. To be fair, there are a reasonable number of guys who take the same kind of attitude to GG (fandom as whole pretty much got over Bridget and Venom/Zato years ago). Maybe it's just a case where there are a few vocal idiots spoiling it for everyone else. I really don't know, the series is on such utter crack it seems so ridiculous to take it that seriously.
Since the "inu ga yukuefumei" site is gone, I don't think there is any doubt anymore :(
Oh, it's not gone - just moved and changed its name. I put a link to the new site in my fanart download post. The only reason it's included in the download is because a lot of the older pics get deleted.
...despite how unfinished and poorly accessible it is, I'd feel horribly like I'm stealing someone else's idea. >.>
If it's not too much bother, I'd love it :D
This is going from memory (don't have the comic handy where I am), but it's set in the 'Gear's Forest', with Sol being the Gear King, and Dizzy being his daughter. Dizzy drags Ky in, apparently convinced she's brought home some sort of 'fish' for dinner (possibly this makes more sense in Japanese? I have no idea ^^;). Sol corrects her ("That's a human. You can't eat that."), then goes on to suggest there's another way he could be (ahem) 'eaten'... aaaand, yeah, right after that is when Dizzy clonks him on the head, declares (in essence) that she saw Ky first and she's going to keep him as a pet. And I recall the collar being a way of suppressing his magic. And that's about as much as I could puzzle out. ^^;
Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call (also known as Nocturne in America), a fantastic RPG for PS2 :)
Oh right - I have heard of that one, there are a couple of girls who used to come to our art club who are huge fans of the series. Most of what I know about it comes out of their fanart though (which is rather crack-pairing heavy but really good stuff).
As for people focusing on the bad endings, maybe it's a case of them just wanting to up the angst factor? :/ I'm not that fond of dark-fic myself though, it'd be irritating to be in a fandom that focused on it.

Hey, when I asked Japanese fanartists for permission to turn their art into an icon, I got enthusiastic replies, saying that they were proud and overjoyed that somebody loved their art so much that they wanted to work with it. They sounded really happy.
If you ask that fanartist for permission to write a fanfiction inspired by her fancomic, I'll bet you she'd send you a gift basket XD
Plus, come on, it's not like Dragon Quest-ish AUs are that original. If you don't feel like going through the trouble of contacting the fanartist, a generic Evil Overlord!Sol/Hero!Ky fanfiction couldn't be considered a "theft" anymore than a generic Blanket Scenario fanfiction.

What really bother me in those fics is not so much the darkness, but my complete inability to recognize the main character.
I like heroes. I like intelligent, kind-hearted people who always try to do the right thing ("intelligent" is the key word here, I usually cannot stand Idiot Heroes and the Dumb Is Good trope).
So, when the main character, whom I customized as a hero, acts like a sociopath in fanfictions and casually slaughters his own underlings, I'm completely flabbergasted. It doesn't feel like a Lucifer's Call fanfiction at all to me, because that's not how I played the game at all.

Date: 2009-08-28 03:37 am (UTC)I'm pretty sure he's the same one who posts regularly on Dustloop and other sites as 'Blade', or varients on the name. He's done a fair bit of translation work for the series (of slightly variable quality), but I can think of a few occasions where he's made a lot of the rest of the forum look comparatively polite. -_- Also, the mere fact I've noticed him flaming SolxKy artists (when I don't even read comments on those pics that regularly) says a lot about how much he must be doing it.
She could have at least left a warning that she moved, rather than just letting people get a 404.
*shrug* She might have had one up temporarily and since then had her paid time at the old account run out, or the move might have been something she mentioned in advance on her blog but which I'd have missed since my Japanese is hardly fluent. It's annoying, but I don't really know the circumstances.
And how the heck do you accede the Underground section? I've been trying to do that for half an hour and I just can't figure it out D:
I don't think she's actually moved it to the new site, and it's pretty much defunct these days anyway - last time any new art was posted there was last year sometime. For the record though, you get to it via her oekaki page (here (http://www19.oekakibbs.com/bbs/tutomu/oekakibbs.cgi), I'm not sure if there's a link to that from the new page either), click on any of the duck icons, and enter the username 'guest' and the password 'free'. And I wouldn't have figured that out either without

Really? That's interesting, I'm more familiar with sites that have warnings posted to remind people not to reuse their art in any way (which an unfortunate number of westerners ignore), or which go out of their way to make the art difficult to save. Probably just asking for permission makes a big difference though.
If you ask that fanartist for permission to write a fanfiction inspired by her fancomic, I'll bet you she'd send you a gift basket XD
...on the other hand, it's one she only posted in an underground section behind more security than I've seen on any other fansite I can think of. That does tend to be a sign people don't want too much attention drawn to something.
I see your point, but short of writing a direct continuation of what she's written (which I wouldn't want to do with work by anyone I didn't know personally, even with permission), I don't have any actual solid ideas of what to do with it. Meanwhile, I've got all these other ideas in the queue and... well, liking the idea in theory doesn't mean I know what I'd do with it in practice, y'know?
Link, please? :D

I'd assume that's different for people who did play the game like that, but everyone focusing on the most miserable possible characterisation of a character would get pretty dull, especially if that wasn't how I saw him. Actually, in any series where there's space for a range of interpretations on characterisation, I tend to get pretty bored if everyone's writing the characters the same way. ^^;

To be fair, it's not like everyone does it.
It's just that those who do it happen to be the best writers in the Fandom by far (perfect grammar and flow, excellent characterization of the non-customable characters, interesting scenarios). And even when they go for a "nice" characterization, they still pick one of the (imo) depressing endings.
