I'm gonna be brutally honest and say that as long as you're writing C&DP getting it on I really don't care how closely you follow old canon. The most research I ever do while reading comics fandom fanfic is a few wikipedia articles so you can sneak a lot past me. The amount of care and consideration you are already devoting to the issue assures me that you won't go wrong.
