Being Human
Oh man, the finale. Bawled my eyes out and loved every minute.. I just... I don't think I've even seen that done before. Absolutely gut wrenching and gloriously written and acted down to last detail – everything that needed to be said was said, every objection that should have been raised was raised – by the end it was hard to imagine that the whole series from day one could ever have been building towards anything else. It loses a little of its impact in retrospect, now that I know one of the lead actors was going to have to leave the series at the end of the season regardless, but even if this wasn't the plan from the beginning, they sold it. Oh my god, did they sell it. It isn't every day you want to almost want to send someone fanmail for doing that to one of your favourite characters.
Digger
Has recently ended, and it will be sorely missed – now when Tuesdays and Thursdays roll around I have one less thing to look forward to – but there's also the satisfaction of seeing a series that has been plodding slowly but surely through its vast and complex plot for so long finally tie up most of its loose ends and reach its logical conclusion, for that I raise my glass to it. I do need to make a proper Digger-fangirl post at some point, not least because the majority of people reading this have probably never even heard of it. Suffice to say that it is (or was) the long-running webcomic by Ursula Vernon (an artist I am sure I could dedicate at least a couple of fangirly posts to without even mentioning Digger), and I would be hard pressed to think, off the top of my head, of many other stories I have ever read that I've loved quite like this. (There are probably plenty I've loved more, or for longer, or written more fic about, or whatever, but that's not the same thing.) And now that it's done and the I can still look forward to getting hold of the last few volumes in dead tree format and reading it all through again.
Birth By Sleep: Final Mix
In a word: disappointing. A few new optional boss battles and a few interesting new features, but the new story content is limited to Aqua running around the world of darkness for a couple of screens, fighting a few random shadow Heartless and one nasty boss Heartless, and a severely underwhelming fifteen-second promo sequence for what appears to be an upcoming game called “Birth By Sleep: Volume 2” (about... Aqua's further adventures in the world of darkness, pre-KH1? But if so, why did the rest of the promo consist of random shots of other characters from later in the series? If this was supposed to get us all excited about a new instalment to the series it failed miserably). Meanwhile, despite all that talk about adding extra cut scenes to clarify the story – IMO, something the original BBS badly needed – nothing whatsoever has been added to the main narrative of the game. I realise we were absolutely spoilt for new content in KHII:FM and the developers only have so much space to work with on a PSP disk, but I still can't help feeling a bit let down that the new content in this rerelease added so little to the experience.
Okamiden DS
My sister picked this up recently, being, of course, the sequel in which you play as Chibiterasu, the adorable little puppy son of Amaterasu, hero of the original game. Who gets his brush-stroke powers from the adorable little animal kids of the thirteen Chinese Zodiac gods from the original game. The adorable quota in this game is off the charts.
It also lead to us having the following conversation:
Her: People keep asking him who his father is.
[significant pause]
Me: You know, Waka was making eyes at her all through the last game.
Her: Yep!
[another significant pause where we both silently reflect on how Waka is very humanoid and Amaterasu is very wolf]
Her: They are gods.
Me: Exactly!
Her: It's perfectly natural!
Me: Nothing to be ashamed of! What mythology would be complete without it?
I love ancient mythology, I really do.
The latest Young Avengers issue
What amuses me most about the possible future for the Young Avengers that we glimpse in this issue is that the clearest sign it's all a case of a World Gone Wrong is not that they're travelling the universe employing mass genocide to neutralise alien threats before they can manifest, or even that they lie to our hero about their intentions and scheme behind his back, but that they're all paired up in the wrong ships.
The second most amusing thing about this issue is that it looks very much like it may be the only standalone issue Marvel has released lately which actually could function well as a jumping on point for new readers – it introduces the team nicely with a flashback to their early days, summarises how they all got together and why and even gives a quick outline of the current storyline to date – and yet it's also the only one not labelled with the .1 numbering tag. Ah Marvel.
The status of all those WIPs I have not updated in however many months
So yeah. It's basically just been a miserable few months for making any kind of meaningful writing progress, for all sorts of mundane reasons which mostly aren't even worth listing. -_- For what it's worth though, the next chapter of Summers'son has broken 6000 words, which I really wasn't counting on it to do (and is likely to end up getting split into the next two chyapters at this rate) while the next of Good Intentions is hovering around 3000 or so and Garden of Eden is still hanging around on a measely couple of hundred. *sigh* Hopefully it won't be too much longer before I have something to show for it all.

Ah, that's nothing!
Loki once shapeshifted into a mare, got himself knocked up by a stallion, and gave birth to Odin's six-legged horse. Another time he knocked up a giantess, and their son was the gigantic god-eating wolf Fenrir. Their other son was a serpent so large he could wrap himself around the world and bite his own tail.
Loki scoffs at that amateur Waka! ;P

Heh, so true.
I've re-read Good Intentions the other day as I was undergoing Sudden Deadpool Craving - almost dropped you a comment but I didn't want to be pushy ^^;; and I love that fic muchly & the last chapter of Summers' son but I also love muchly ;) glad you're not giving up on it despite slow progress!

Date: 2011-03-31 10:42 am (UTC)I could have done without the last minute interruption by the next season set-up vampire myself, but otherwise I think the melodrama/talky stuff was what I liked most about it. If any scenario could have called for melodrama and an extra round of talking through everything to make sure the right decision was being made, I felt like this was it.
Agreed on the quality of the series as a whole. Wasn't hugely fond of the second and third episodes, but once things it really kept me on the edge of my seat. They even mostly managed to sell me on the idea of Mitchell/Annie, which I really wasn't expecting.
Heh, so true.
Well, that and the fact the costumes they had them all wearing. But mostly the ships. *g*
glad you're not giving up on it despite slow progress!
Definitely not! Kicking myself for not doing a much better job of finding time to work on them, but absolutely not giving up!
