A couple of months back, I posted reference pics and cosplay plans for a teen Cable costume. This is how it came out.

Teen Nate was my Sunday costume for this year's Supanova - conveniently both the only big Perth con which features Western comics related events as a big part of its attractions and held in the perfect time of year to spend the day wearing a big, warm coat. The bad news: though Deadpool cosplayers are usually easy to find around Supanova (and those lucky bastards over in Sydney even got a stripper Deadpool this year), I didn't find a single one to take photos with on Sunday this year. ;_;

The good news is we still managed to get some decent photos taken in a quick shoot around the back after the cosplay comp.

My sister [livejournal.com profile] pinneagig gets credit both for taking all these photos and for painting on my scar, which unfortunately had partially rubbed off by this stage of the day.

Here's how the full costume came out, both with the coat done up and hanging open.

Random trivia: you may notice the the coat bulges quite a bit when done up. This is because it turns out that when you cover your belt in big, bulgy pouches, it does not want to do up properly anymore - and this even after I'd cut down to only two of the things. /things you get to ignore when you live in a world of comic-book physics

The eye was always the first thing people noticed on the day. It's not photoshopped in - I was actually wearing a white contact lens on that side. Here's a pic that shows it off a bit better.

The white lens is completely opaque so it left me functionally blind on that side. While this meant I probably missed a lot of stuff going on to my left, you stop noticing it's there very quickly. The less fun part was that it's fair bit larger than the lenses I'm used to and started to stick to my upper eyelid after a few hours of wear. Not fun, but overall not nearly as uncomfortable as you'd probably expect.

A few more pictures:

As for the rest of the costume, the coat was made from scratch and was what took most of the time. The hand I made by covering a pair of gloves with strips of silver pleather. Knuckles were made out of craft foam and covered with more pleather. The neck is more pleather strips glued onto a fabric base and held in place with double sided tape. Finally, to get the right effect on the wig I bought a standard short brown wig and stitched some white wefts into the fringe, then backcombed the shit out of them until they deigned to stay up.

So that's my teen Cable costume, and if anyone does happen to know a Deadpool cosplayer in Perth who'd be up for a photoshoot with a crazy crossdressing fangirl, you know where to find me.

no photoshopped eye-glow? ;P

Not unless I'm actively levitating something (which technically he couldn't do anymore at this point in the comics, not that that stopped them adding it to the cover art). Though trust me, if we'd thought of a way to make it look like I was levitating in these pics...

That said, maybe I should have a word to Lisa about that.

Does it only happen when he's levitating? I thought it was just... using his powers. Or, you know, randomly. <.<

I think it would be a smashing idea
From: [identity profile] rallamajoop.livejournal.com
It's whenever he's using his powers (or when the artists have decided they feel like giving him a glowy eye today, though we will ignore that because if we start believing everything they tell is then we'd end up having to concoct ridiculous theories where Cable has a third leg or something just to make it all add up) - levitating something is just the most obvious case. But most of the time it's not supposed to glow, and teen Cable in those chapters is pretty explicitly depowered. So by that standard, a glowy eye in this photos would be pure, canon-negligent fanservice. Not that there is anything wrong with fanservice.

...which photo do you think needs a glowy eye the most? One of the two full-body shots, maybe?

There's always this one, I guess ;)

:nodsnods: Yeah I figured it was something like that.

... oh my GOD, why hasn't anyone crossed Cable and Deadpool with First Class yet I CHOOSE YOU

or one of the ones with your hand outstretched to the foreground. Makes it LOOK like you're trying to do something, anyway.

This is good, because I think I did too

Date: 2011-08-19 03:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rallamajoop.livejournal.com
Um, well, technically First Class is set in the same universe as Origins, so technically they already have a Deadpool, only continuity-wise he has not yet become Deadpool, or possibly even been born. Also, if Cable went that far back in time, he'd be dealing with a period where even his parents hadn't been born yet, and that takes all the fun out of it. yeah, I know continuity doesn't matter to them (TWO EMMA FROSTS!) but it matters to me, damnit!

Almost related: did you catch Origins on TV last week? =D I finally got to see it the whole way through a second time without the bloody plane landing early before the climax!

Yeah, I would have gone with those, but my hair is kind of hanging in front of the relevant eye there and in my defence, how was I supposed to know it was doing that?

oh right. well. um. TIME TRAVEL (Surely if Alex is alive Scott is also alive? Or is there a HUGE age gap? Or is Alex supposed to be Scott's father? CONFUSED)

...Origins was on TV? uhm, I basically don't watch TV at all so uh yeah, I totally missed it. I think I have a DLd copy somewhere.

hmm, that's true! Well in that case I think you should use the full-length shot that doesn't have cars in the background.

IDEK, the timeline is pretty messed up, but if Alex is supposed to be Xavier's age, then I find the idea of him and Scott being brothers a bit implausible. Maybe he's Scott's uncle, or something. It gets worse - in comics canon Alex dates Magneto's daughter. Think about that one.

pff we could totally shop it so the cars are levitating!

nooooooooo they called them 'kids' for a reason, no WAY Alex is in his 30s. I'll buy 18. MAYBE 19.

hahaha

Well, no, but I didn't buy Xavier as being in his 30's either. Mid-twenties, probably.

IIRC he'd only just finished his PhD (which my sister is set to do before she's 25) so he is newly qualified for professor-hood at best, and he can't have been more than a couple of years older than Ravan, max. They look practically the same age when they met, and she doesn't seem any older than the other 'kids'.

I knoooooow, but they go really a long way in establishing that Charles and Erik are mummy and daddy and the rest of them are the kids, so I assume that Charles is late 20s/maybe 30, Erik is early-mid 30s and the kids are late teens/maybe 20.

Eh, the 'kids' thing is more a matter of levels of experience. Doesn't have to be an age gap of more than a few years when you're comparing a bunch of mutants who've never even had a name for what they are before to a guy who survived the concentration camps and another who's got his PhD in biology and has had psychic insight into what makes people tick his whole life. If the kids are in their late teens/early twenties, they're still young enough that a three or four year age gap is a long time. Plus they make a big thing of Charles acting like an immature college student in those bar scenes. I'd buy late twenties, but my guess is still about 25.

I also cannot possibly buy Charles as being more than mid-twenties because MY GOD they make him stupid on the subject of Raven's body issues, and that doesn't make any sense unless you assume he's young enough to still have some growing up to do. But that's more of a side issue.

Thanks - though after years of making J-RPG based costumes, this one was actually a pretty easy job. Cable has nothing on all the crazy buckles and other do-dads the Japanese can come up with. x_x (The white eye and all that double sided tape were certainly new experiences all the same.)

Excellent job!

weeeeell technically the collar doesn't sit quite the way it's supposed to when it's open because the connectors ended up a bit heavy, and if you look closely the join where the white wefts were sewn in is a little obvious, there are a couple of straps missing from the coat and I do not have enough pouches, so it isn't quite perfect, but all that's incredibly nitpicky even by perfectionist cosplayer standards, so I will happily take 'almost perfect' at the very least. I was very happy with how it came out. ^_^
