You all know what happens when something Very Important needs to be Done ASAP, don’t you?

To get the saga of everything-that-can-possibly-go-wrong rolling, my supervisor took a little longer than expected to get back to me with revisions on my draft copy. And when I say ‘longer than expected’ I mean ‘not until Sunday morning’. This put a bit of a crimp on my plans to have everything finished and printed out on by Saturday afternoon so I wouldn’t have to spend Monday morning running around getting things professionally bound and suchwhat.

Oh shut up, it seemed like a fairly realistic goal at the time.

Between making said final revisions and the exciting process of reformatting everything several times over so that the pictures appear where they’re supposed to (and not, y’know, rushing this too much, because of course there’s still plenty of time at this point), this meant it was all ready for printing by around Sunday evening. Dad’s computer, being the one hooked up to the printer, chose this point to crash in a spectacular fashion. An hour or so later, it became fairly obvious that this was not a problem that could be fixed quickly, so the printer was hoisted upstairs and hooked up to my computer, and the process of printing two copies of this eighty-page monster began.

About 35 pages in, the printer runs out of ink, and it quickly proves Dad doesn’t have any spares. It’s now 9:30 on Sunday night. There is no way in hell we’re going to get hold of a new printer cartridge before tomorrow morning. The rest of the evening is spent stressing in an unproductive fashion. Not much sleep happens.

The following morning involves waking up at 6 AM for no useful reason seeing as nothing will be open for two hours at least, rushing out to find somewhere which is both open and stocks the appropriate printer cartridges, reformatting everything in the word document again, and spending the best part of an hour waiting for everything to actually print. Somewhere in the middle of all this, my mouse stops working for no obvious reason.

Getting the whole document to the printers to get bound up neatly and into uni turned out to be the easy bit. And for the record, this leaves out both the saga of everything I went through to find a way to get the document converted to pdf format in a way that actually worked and the bizarre sequence of events that lead to the discovery that pictures in Word all came out blurry unless they were copied into MSPaint and copied back again (and that, people, is nothing if not the Microsoft we all know and have grudgingly learned to tolerate).

But my God is it good to have this thing handed in. This post did not appear until today, because the last couple of days were blissfully spent doing nothing of remotely productive nature whatsoever.

While I’m here, I’d like to extend a general apology to everyone I’ve hardly spoken to in the last ten months. It’s been a crazy year, but the worst is finally over.
