rallamajoop: (xxxHolic)

I swear, if I ever manage to build a reputation in this fandom, it's going to be as the xxxHolic crossover girl.

Title:What You Wish For
Summary: Ed and Al stumble on to a shop which deals in an unusual sort of merchandise.
Spoilers: Nothing serious for either series.
Word count: 540
Notes: So, one of my larger projects right now is (what will be) a decently long Tsubasa/FMA crossover. This isn't part of that, but the similarity between the ideas of equivalent trade from FMA and Tsubasa's sister series intrigued me enough that they seemed worth exploring a short piece of their own.

Ed wasn’t happy about any of this. He didn’t believe in wishes. He was willing, given the evidence, to admit they existed, even that they worked in the right context, but the same was true of the Fuhrer’s foreign policy. It didn’t mean he had to believe in any of it.

“But you do have a wish, don’t you?” Said Yuuko. “Something you want more than anything else?”

Ed gritted his teeth, but this didn’t seem like the time to be less than truthful. “Al’s body,” he said, and with only a little hesitation added, “and my arm and leg. You can do that?”

“I can do that easily.” Yuuko smiled. “But there must be a price, of course - something of equal value. Someone in your profession must appreciate that, mustn’t they? The art you practice is based upon it.”

“The principle of equivalent trade.” Ed said automatically, although not even the discovery of familiar ground was doing much for his uneasiness. “So? What's the price.”

“Your price is everything you gained from that day. Your aptitude for alchemy, the relationships you have formed since then – and one more thing. You must have nothing more to do with the struggle against the homunculi. They will cease to pursue you, with so much of your power gone, but you must take no part in what will become of them.”

Ed’s eyes widened as far as they were capable of widening. “You bitch.” He snarled. “How the hell is any of that of any value to you?”

“Not to me. But it is all of value to you and your brother. Equivalent value."

Ed’s grimace turned halfway into a grin. There was a sort of poetic genius to it he couldn’t help but admire. "It's not about its value at all, is it? It's about what you're willing to give up for it."

"What value has anything, save the worth that humans place upon it? People are wise to think very carefully about what they truly want most before they ask anything from me.”

“So. Just Al’s body then. What’s the price for that?”

“Niisan!”

Yuuko maintained her composure as though Al's outburst had never happened. “The same as I just told you, the only exception being, your alchemical ability you may keep.”

“And if I’d asked you to destroy the homunculi, the price would have been any chance to restore our bodies again, wouldn’t it?”

“On the contrary, Edward. The price for the means to achieve that wish would be both that and your other arm and leg.”

Ed gripped his real arm with his mechanical one reflexively. “And the wish to restore our mother? What would have been the price for that?”

“That I could not grant you. The price to restore the dead is too high. Nothing you could give me would be worth enough, but that much you’ve already discovered, haven’t you?”

Ed had to admit, there was part of him that was still tempted to make a deal with this woman. But it was a distant part and nothing more – just one of the voices in your head you learn to ignore long before you grow up half as much as Ed had had to.

“Come on, Al.” He said, then glanced back at Yuuko. “Sorry, but I can’t do any business with you.”

They never went down the road where they found the shop again. It didn’t matter, it wouldn’t have been there for them any longer anyway.

Nicely done. I swear what people don't see is how FMA is more magic-oriented than science. You have the characters down pat. I applaud you.

Thanks. This is the first thing I've written with any of the FMA characters, good to know you thought it worked. ^_^

I did. Yuuko does say her shop encompasses worlds. Why not FMA, too? Can you imagine Hughes or Mustang meeting her?

Can you imagine Hughes or Mustang meeting her?

Hm, not so easily, actually. Yuuko's made it very clear that only people with a wish for her to grant can enter her shop, and while those two certainly have goals of their own, I'd see them more as the Doumeki-type who'd want to reach those goals through their own work. (I can imagine Hughes showing Yuuko photos of his daughter, of course, but I can imagine him doing that with *anyone*)

From: [identity profile] akinarei.livejournal.com
Yeah, he would, wouldn't he? Can you see her expression? Oh, the sake she'd be calling for! Actually, it'd make me laugh if Doumeki or Watanuki were ever unfortunate enough to meet him. The photo's would burn images into their retina's or something. ^_^

The price to restore the dead is to high.

that should be "too". Just my nitpick for now, but other than that, great. But this is manga-verse, right? And how did the Elric brothers get there in the first place?

Or will we find out in later parts?

Date: 2006-11-27 11:16 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rallamajoop.livejournal.com
Won't be any later parts, this is a one-shot. But really, do you think a shop like Yuuko's needs an excuse to show up in another world? The point of a crossover like this is to say what might happen if they did meet, not to explain how it could happen, if you get where I'm coming from. Thanks for pointing out that error though, I'll get that fixed.

I love you for combining Arakawa-sensei and CLAMP.
*Glomp* I WANT MORE. *Whines* Plus you'll get a lot more fic publicity if you post more in fm_alchemist.

Glad you enjoyed it! ^_^ I was planning to post at fm_alchemist, actually, but membership is closed over there so I had to wait for them to add me first. There won't be any more of this fic, I'm afraid, but does the promise of an (eventual) Tsubasa/FMA fic still count?

^^ That was awesome. It's really IC, and seems plausible.

Thanks! Of course, xxxHolic is so filled with crossovers and dimension hopping and all that you could combine it with just about *anything* and it would still be plausible. Ed and Al just had a little more obvious material to talk with Yuuko about than a lot of characters would have.

I've never read xxxHolic. Sounds twisted, like the Petshop series. Anyway, I really liked this. Nicely done!

Much Love,

And I've never read the Petshop series, so I'm not sure how they compare. I don't think I'd describe xxxHolic as 'twisted', although it can definitely be... unhealthy not to take Yuuko's advice. Anyway, thanks - if even non-xxxHolic fans can enjoy this, I can't have done too badly.

Ooooh, you should check Petshop of Horrors out. Troubled people come to the shop for the "perfect pet," but what they get is rarely what they expect, however fitting it is for them in the end. The way Yuuko was bargaining with Ed reminds me of Count D's explanations for the tragedies that befall his customers who don't follow the instructions for properly caring for their animals. That sense of pleasure in doing business I suppose...and they both involve shops. XD

=D That was wonderful. I can totally see that happening if those three were to ever cross paths. I LOVE Ed's decision the most though, well written, very in character, and entertaining to boot <3

Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Ed's decision was pretty well a foregone conclusion from the start, but I'm sure his talk with Yuuko gave him some food for thought at the very least.

Wow, wonderfully done. I love both xxxHolic and Fullmetal Alchemist and seeing them put together and in character is a truly remarkable thing.

Well done.

I was waiting for something like this and I was waiting as soon as I heard/read Yuuko's words of doom about how a wish can only be granted if the person can pay the price.

I seriously love you now for doing this, and for doing it so well.

How Yuuko's price is (almost) the price paid at the end, how Ed is so desperately trying to find a loophole, everything.

I look forward to reading your longer series. ^_^

I think I actually had some thoughts about an FMA crossover way back when I first heard Yuuko talking about prices too. Figuring out what those prices were actually going to be in Ed and Al's case took a bit more thought, but from there it all came together pretty easily. XXXHolic really was made for crossovers. ^_^

The longer series is still in the barely started stage right now (I have a few plot things I should sort out before I get started on it properly), but I think I'll be able to have some fun with that one too. Thanks for all your nice comments and enthusiasm though, it's wonderfully encouraging.

Awesomeness. Thr prices Yuuko puts on things is very in-character of her. Most of the wishes she seems to grant in that manga never really seem worth the price... maybe that's why they're wishes. ^ ^;;

Thanks for reading! Yuuko definitely does charge high (not to mention *creative*) rates, and this fic got written mostly because of a brainwave regarding just what Yuuko might ask the Elric brothers for, if they ever brought their wish to her. Glad to hear you liked what I eventually came up with there. ^_^

♥ Lovely. I greatly enjoyed this.

Oh, and I second the rec for Petshop of Horrors. Yuuko and Count D would get along swimmingly. And there's a lot of lovely Count D/Leon slash. :D

Thanks! ^_^ Going by what I've heard about Petshop of Horrors (read: looked it up on wikipedia) it sounds like you're dead right. Wonder if anyone's ever written a crossover where they do meet? (And even if it hasn't been written, you can bet they know each other - it seems pretty safe to say Yuuko knows everyone)

Awesome!

I dub thee, Crossover Queen. All hail, the queeen of xxxholic crossovers. I am thy humble servant, your majesty. XD

Bwa! *love love and other such incoherency*

Quickly, before I lose rational thought: Such a wonderful job portraying the FMA boys (most especially Ed). If anyone knows the price for getting what you want, it's those two. Great job!

*back to love love incoherency*

Eheh, I swear, I've caught some sort of virulent crossover disease in the last few months. It's not just xxxHolic either, there's this pile of short Kingdom Hearts crossovers and a couple of Snakes On Vehicles Other Than A Plane fic and... look, it's not my fault all these series are *made* for crossovers, is it? XD

I had a vague feeling a FMA/xxxHolic crossover would work well a while back, but I couldn't figure out what Yuuko's prices would be. So I started on the Tsubasa one instead, and somewhere in the process of hashing out some stuff for that, this one just clicked out of the blue and got written after all. So now I guess I'm back to trying to figure out how these last few tricky plot things for the Tsubasa one are going to fit together again, but I think I'm getting there (I mean, *how* did it take me so long to figure out that that villain who I couldn't identify was another CLAMP character? How obvious was that?)

^^; And yeah, I tend to blab a lot when I start talking about writing, but the gist should be: thanks as always, you may have found this fic a little later, but feedback this nice is so very much worth waiting for. ^_^

I love your fics. Very in character. :D Also, I third that Petshop of Horrors rec. I have read a crossover between Petshop and xxxHolic before, but unfortunately I don't remember where. There's a scene in the manga where Leon wonders why Count D keeps a stash of sake in his cupboards that would be perfect for a crossover with xxxHolic.

Thanks! ^_^ The more I hear about them, the more it sounds like xxxHolic and Petshop of Horrors really would fit together beautifully - it isn't surprising at least one crossover has been done before.

Pretty awesome. I wonder what someone like, say any member of the Sohma Family from Fruits Basket, would be charged for getting rid of their curse? Yuuko always ask for something big. Neat story though! -Shel

From: [identity profile] rallamajoop.livejournal.com
Ooh, that's an interesting idea, with the Sohma family. I'm not sure a lot of them would even dare to ask, but if they did I'd dread to think how high Yuuko's price would be (and it would have to be *enormous*). Maybe I'll keep that in mind in case I feel like writing some more crossovers sometime. ^_^

Heh, liking the FMA crossovers, huh? I've still got the Tsubasa/FMA one in the works too, thought it's turning into a monster and may not be up for a while yet. I really do seem to have a thing for crossovers lately. ^^;
