Hey look, a meme!

1. Leave me a comment saying that you want me to ask you 5 questions. (Or, hell, ask me questions or whatever – I feel like I’m on an answering roll right now)
2. I respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better. If I already know you well, expect the questions may be a little more intimate.
3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions. (Or just answer in a reply comment and skip the last couple of steps, I don’t really care either way)
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.

Questions from [livejournal.com profile] ficcentricity:

1. How did you get into fandom, and why did you stay?
2. What is your favorite pairing in any fandom and why do you like it?
3. Your favorite childhood memory?
4. Do you like Doumeki or Watanuki better?
5. What's your favorite landmark where you live?

1. How did you get into fandom, and why did you stay?
Ahah, well, what I often like to say is that I was pretty much *born* in fandom. No, really - I’ve loved sci-fi and fantasy of all kinds for as long as I can remember. I even have photographic evidence that I was addicted to Astroboy as young as the age of three. But the big event I list as the defining moment which got me into fandom in a serious way was when I was 14 and one of my friends showed me my first ever episodes of Dragonball. She had four of the movies and three episodes on tapes which must have been second or third generation recordings at least, all in Japanese except one which was in Chinese, and only two of them had any English subtitles, but by the end of that afternoon I had already fallen deeply and madly in love with the show. I quickly got my sister and some other friends hooked and we spent a fun couple of years hunting through Chinese newsagencies in Northbridge for trading cards and more low quality videos. Later, we discovered a local anime club and gradually started going to cons, getting to know more other fans and discovering the exciting world out there on the net.

As for why I stayed – dude, it’s a collective of interesting people who like all the same stuff I like, what’s not to love? For all our ongoing stupidities and dramas and the arguments that will never end, there are so many awesome people out there who I’d never have met otherwise. And while I’ve branched all over the place into just about every other media form on the fannish radar at one time or another, anime fandoms still account for a lot of my favourites. I’ve never quite fallen out of love with Dragonball either. =3

2. What is your favorite pairing in any fandom and why do you like it?
Don’t know that I’ve ever had a single favourite. I’m such an utter fandom butterfly that I don’t often even have a favourite series very long before something new and shiny has caught my attention, let alone a favourite pairing. Sol/Ky from Guilty Gear would probably be my current favourite, but the pairing that has gotten me most involved for the longest (and made me turn out fic faster than I ever had any idea I was even capable of writing ^_____^) would have to be Doumeki/Watanuki, hands down. In general, for a pairing to attract me it has to be a case where I really like both characters in their own right, and the on-screen relationship between them is interesting. Going by recent obsessions, I’d have to say that if there’s a bit of conflict mixed in there (say, they argue constantly and/or are willing to beat the living crap out of each other while still being madly in love) that may be a bit of a bonus too.

It’s pretty unusual for me to stray too far from canon for a ship. In Kingdom Hearts fandom I was pretty much just shipping the same ships everyone else was in love with (Sora/Riku or Sora/Riku/Kairi and Axel/Roxas), and back in Naruto fandom I’d happily ship just about anything with any half-decent canonical basis. Some other big ones over the years have been Vash/Meryl from Trigun (why are there not more heroines as un-annoying as Meryl?), Sana/Hayama from Kodomo no Omocha (WHY ARE THERE NOT MORE CENTRAL COUPLES AS AWESOME AS THEM?!) and Touya/Yukito from CCS (beautifully subtle and utterly adorable together <3). I also have a tendency to pick up attachments to couples which are only possible in past tense, like Inu Yashu/Kikyo, Tsunade/Dan, Kenshin/Tomoe etc.

But to get me involved enough to write/read fic for it, the best stuff is nearly always the ones which are just on the edge of canon without ever quite crossing the line. It’s those ones that leave us the most space left to explore in fic, and try out so many different interpretations of how it could have happened. I sometimes feel like I may be the only one out there in this part of the fandom who’s not actually sure whether she’d even want to see Doumeki and Watanuki get it together. I like the relationship a little too much just as it is.

3. Your favorite childhood memory?
Hee, there’s got to be a few contenders for this one, but I think I’m going to go with the day when I was twelve years old when I beat Chris T. at arm wrestling.

Okay, context: and there’s quite a bit of this needed. When I said I was just about born in fandom up above I meant it – I’ve been a geek for just about forever. Back in primary school I was always the smart, quiet, nerdish kid who’s shy and lousy at sport and who gets picked on a lot and who hardly anyone likes much. You know the kind. But the other thing you need to know is that from when I was seven to when I was fourteen I used to do gymnastics. I was never flexible enough to be any good at most of it, though there was one area where I always stood out, and that was in strength work. Bars was far and away my favourite apparatus, and a big part of the reason why was that even way back when I was a scrawny little primary school kid I could pull myself clean over the high bar from a vertical hang without even straining. I was *strong* for my age back in those days. The few good friends I had knew it, but most of the class would never have imagined. Did I mention the part where I was lousy at most school sports?

Anyway, the scene starts during one of our sports afternoons. The class had been split into three groups to play volleyball – two playing at a time while the other had a break. During the last break of the day for my team a few of the other kids started arm wrestling to pass the time. Looked like fun, so I managed to join in. I played and won a match or two, don’t remember who against, before I wound up against Chris T. (so called to distinguish him from Chris P. and Chris M. – we had a lot of Chris’s in our class that year). He wasn’t huge, but he was one of basketball playing boys and probably our single biggest class troublemaker. But maybe the best bit was the timing, since this happened right at the end of the day. So it was just as the other two teams had finished their last game and came over to gather around to see what we were doing that I slammed his arm down against the table.

And the whole class cheered so loudly they just about deafened me.

Everyone – even a lot of people who wouldn’t have spoken to me other than to sneer most of the time cheered. I was a school celebrity for an hour or two before it wore off and everything went back to normal, but it was a good hour or two.

It’s not just a good memory because the class outcast put one over the class troublemaker. It’s also a good memory because it’s one of the biggest reminders I’ve ever had that even though life might suck a lot of the time, sometimes even the people you’d expect it from the least surprise you in a good way. Maybe all they need is the right chance.

It didn’t make up for everything else I ever went though in primary school, but it sure went a long way. ^_^

4. Do you like Doumeki or Watanuki better?
I really, really love the both of them, but I’d still definitely have to say Watanuki. It took me a good while to really get into holic (for a long time I was only really reading for the Tsubasa connections) and I didn’t think much of him initially, but oh, did he ever start growing on my once the series got going. He’s up there with characters like Vash and Sora in my lists of those I’ve completely and utterly fallen for, there’s so much to love about him. He’s a complete and utter spaz and he’s the sweetest boy imaginable piled into one – it’s all just down to who he’s interacting with at the time. He has a completely warped sense of personal responsibility, he’s willing to give so much up to help people who matter that it verges on insanity, and for all that he complains so long and loudly about what Yuuko and Doumeki and all those spirits put him through, deep down inside he always means so well.

But the best thing about him is how far he’s come, that he’s up to the stage now where he can say thankyou to Doumeki and tell Kohane he’s glad he met Yuuko and deal with so many terrible revelations about Himawari with so much maturity and yet without ever loving her any less for any of it. The climax of the spider’s eye arc when he’s finally faced with the fact that he’s hurting the people who care about him by not caring enough about himself is far and away my favourite part of the series to date. It’s so perfectly true to him, and yet I can’t think of anywhere else I’ve ever seen a series with a moral like that before. You can see all his faults and why he has them without ever thinking less of him for it. And he never stops being a lovable loudmouthed spaz in the process.

I could rant on about how much I love Doumeki too, but that’s a whole other question.

5. What's your favorite landmark where you live?
I live in bleeding Perth, have we got any landmarks? There are parts of King’s Park which are nice, I guess, but I’m not exactly there enough to have gotten that attached to them. And there are a few places down by the beach where we go to watch the sunset on new year’s eve sometimes which have some sentimental value, but they wouldn’t be especially landmarky to most people. Same goes for parts of UWA, some places we visited with our grandparents when we were younger and such. Nothing that really stands out though.

1. WHY ARE YOU NEVER AVAILABLE FOR LUNCH ANYMORE? *sob*
2. What on earth am I going to get you for your birthday this year?
3. How different do you think your life would have been if you'd never seen Evangelion?
4. I'm feeling nostalgic. How about sharing some early impressions of JAFWA/Swancon/some similar fannish thing?
5. Hm. Favourite food? Favourite video game? Favourite colour? Something to that effect? I've heard so many crazy stories from you over the years it's hard to come up with anything left I dare ask. ^^;

1. *sobs too* Because my employers don't allow me enough room for Cathy- time. However, come the end of the month, I'll have my Thursday administration shifts back, so, hey, what do you know? LUNCH!!!

2. You know, I don't know. :-) You don't really have to get me anything, you and Lisa exceeded the maximum possible level of generosity when the ever- wonderful Zaphod Beeblebrox costume came into being. However, if you really want to give me something, just a burnt disc of some anime would be nice. :-) Hell, I'll give you back some that I borrowed from you, oh, five years ago. :-)

3. Wow! This one's incredibly perceptive of you! I mean, incredibly so - my life would've been completely different! Georgia and I would've been forced to communicate on a basic level that consisted of "Hello" and "Goodbye", and I don't suppose I would've made it to Anime Night via the route I did. I probably would've had to rely on Liam discovering JAFWA independently, then asking me to come with him. So, we probably would've made it, give or take a few years dressed as Goths, by around 2004. Of course, if I hadn't seen Evangelion, I'd also be less familiar with the oft- quoted Book of Revelation, from which comes the title of my journal. Plus, I never would've harbored the desire to beat up a 15 year- old Japanese boy, how Alistair and I came to loathe Shinji's whining... We could've piloted the damn robot... I don't care if it is his mother.

4. Man, when I first came to JAFWA, it was a beautiful night. I'd spent the afternoon with Shasta and Georgia, then met you and Lisa, Aaron, Adele, Louise... Sure, I jumped around and made up some manic mime about "two- dimensional fighters", it was a wonderful evening. Running back and forth on a university campus that was always much more interesting during the night. I seem to recall that it was winter, I was very much inside my own head, but so utterly taken aback by these interesting and fun people that I had encountered. I remember not actually sitting on a chair for most of the evening, because I was hugging Shasta, which was a combination of comfortable (arms) and uncomfortable (lower spine). The episode of Slayer's Next that was shown that evening was by far the funniest in the series, with Gourry dressed up as a squid. "Oooooooh", he moaned. Kenshin was on, securing my love for the "I will kill you, no, sorry, I won't, I'm a very nice person, I will talk to you, then maim you" school of philosophical samurai cinema. Was Lupin on that night? Or was that another? You know, I do actually have so many happy memories of Anime Night, so very, very many, it's almost worth going back, just to relive being fourteen with you guys. I couldn't imagine a better place to have made friends.

5. I used to say that my favourite food was lasagne, because Garfield enjoyed it so, while my favourite video game used to be whatever Sonic the Hedgehog game I was playing (as long as it wasn't Sonic Spinball, which is utterly dreadful.) These, however, aren't quite the case anymore, I selected them because I realised that I should have a favourite "something" when I was younger. However, my favourite colour is purple. After a brief flirtation with pink (age 5) and black (age 10), I have settled on purple, especially rich, dark purples, because purple is the colour of Donatello, the finest turtle, and The Phantom, the greatest comic book hero of this and any other time.

1. I still want to borrow the first Guilty Gear game, do you think could you bring it to the party this weekend? =D
2. Do you realise you crowbared all the wrong people this year? You left all the ones who were better than me!!!
3. WHAT AM I GOING TO GET JOHN FOR HIS BIRTHDAY?
4. Hell, it's been a while, what *are* you up to these days? (Excluding stuff which has been covered on LJ, of course)
5. What was the first favourite movie/game/TV show you ever had?

...

*rereads list*

Possibly I still owe you three extra questions. >.> Er, I'll get back to you. XD

1. Ha ha, already part of the plan :D

2. I thought if I put you in a skating version of a typical Goku situation you'd unlock your hidden skating super saiyin transformation and whoop arse.

3. Increasing the standard day to 26 hours so John has time to have lunch with you.

4. Pretty much recovering from spending four months overseas sleeping on other peoples couches, the flu, oooh and I may have to see a scalpel jockey to remove a very persistent stye in my eyelid. Most of all I am looking forward to catching up with everybody.

5. First fav movie - Star Wars (ep 4) It was the first movie I ever saw and it blew me away. It actually held the top spot as number one all time fav movie for me until I saw The Matrix. Still have a large soft spot for it though. Han shoots Greedo first FTW!!!

First fav game - Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday (Commodore 64) Not the first RPG I ever played, but it was the first sci-fi type one I came across and it also had the added bonus of having Buck Rogers in it! I played through that game so many times that I knew where every single item was and every quirk of the game. I remember on one play through I killed Buck Rogers so one of my characters could have his Lunarian Smartsuit and one of a kind pistol. Good times.

First fav TV show - Batman (as in Adam West with the KAPOW! and BOP!) Quite possibly where I developed my unhealthy love for all things b-grade and awesome craptacularness in general.

2. ...damn, they just musn't have been strong enough! *Immediately embarks on journey to hunt down the greatest skating opponents she can find in order to gain EXP and get stronger, or die trying (since even dying will only result in her getting stronger anyway as soon as she is brought back to life once more >D)*

3. Hm. Maybe once I have raised my level enough. *ponders*

4. Well, that's what this weekend should be good for. ^_^

5. FTW!!! indeed!

Also, re:Batman, Bwaha! That really does explain far too much. XD

1. Um. So, given that all I really know about the subject is a few posts about trips to Busselton, what are you studing exactly? (Many apologies if I've asked you this before and have forgotten the answer - I do that to people a lot with this question. ^^;)
2. What was your first fandom?
3. Aside from the last Wai-con and GO3, what other cosplay have you done before? Anything else planned?
4. I think I remember you mentioning you write at some point - anything you've posted online you wouldn't mind me having a look at?
5. What's Singapore like? (I've been there once, but since I was about four at the time, I really don't remember a lot about it ^^;)
6. Like to come over and play some Guilty Gear sometime? =D

From: [identity profile] sansele.livejournal.com
1. I'm studying Vet Science at Murdoch. :) Second year. (It's on my user info too, heh.) Nope, you haven't asked before!

2. Without a doubt, it's gotta be Fushigi Yuugi. I was watching a few other series and the like, but that was what got me head-over-heels in love with anime and straight into fandom. *points at user icon* The chinese character there is the symbol for my favourite character of all time. XD I'm incredibly (and perhaps unfortunately) loyal to the series.

3. Besides those outfits, I also cosplayed Hinamori Momo (Bleach) and Tohya Miho (Megatokyo) in 2005. In 2006, I cosplayed Kaede (Shuffle!) and Misa (Death Note) for the Singapore cons. I'm planning to cosplay TRC!Sakura, Azmaria (Chrno Crusade) and Allen Walker (D.Gray-man) for this year. Also Soi Fong (Bleach). "Planning" being the keyword here. ^^; There's a ton of cosplays that I want to do, but I'm taking it a year at a time.

4. Yes! Ummm... I do have a writing LJ at [livejournal.com profile] inksplat with my NaNos up. Some of the entries are flocked. I also have a Bleach fic on Byakuya here (http://sansele.livejournal.com/86925.html) and a bunch of stuff I wrote about my muses in my memories (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?user=sansele&keyword=Muses&filter=all). I write plenty of original stuff, but most of it's unfinished on my laptop.

5. Very bright at night as compared to Perth. @_@ We have one too many lights, methinks. It's very crowded, but full of good shopping, good fantastic food, an amazing selection of anime merchandise/lolita stuff and good cosplay. Also, a lot of high-rise buildings. And Chinese people, for a multiracial country. You should come here for a holiday!

6. ...*resists urge to find boat and start paddling back to Perth* XD

1. Ahaha. Er. Understanding that I only really know you from the exchange of a few comments here and there, who are you exactly? *is shot*
(Seriously - feel free to interpret and answer this one however you like.)
2. How'd you get into xxxHOLiC fandom?
3. What other fandoms are you in? Any old favourites/new shiny things?
4. What else can we do to make [livejournal.com profile] ficcentricity write the library AU faster?
5. Aside from the obvious suspects (meaning Watanuki and Doumeki) who's your favourite holic/other CLAMP character? Are there any you wound up liking more than you expected?

From: [identity profile] themodestotter.livejournal.com
HAHA, I REPLY IN MY USUAL LATE FASHION. I am the one that deserves to be shot, not you. XD

1. I'm a wide variety of things? Um, mostly I'm just sort of floating around, although I have written xxxHOLiC fic before, and I should be now, but that's a different matter entirely.
:D;;; I sort of make friends out of people who are cooler than me and hitch a ride. XD Or I make friends out of them before they are cool, and then they get really cool and I can't keep up with them anymore.

Otherwise, I'm an otter. Yup. A modest otter. 16, female.

Self Bio's are hard. That probably just told you absolutely nothing about me XD

2. I was like, oh look, this is supposed to have something to do with Tsubasa! so I bought it on a whim. And then I realized that it is far cooler than Tsubasa. XD

As for donuts, xxxHOLiC Really unleashed my inner yaoi fangirl. I never even liked that kind of stuff before HOLiC. Yep. Two boys who wear the same outfit all the time and aren't really bishies at all got me into yaoi. I'm speshul like that.

3. A lot? Currently collecting Buso Renkin, Black Cat, Absolute Boyfriend, Kaze Hikaru, La Corda d'Oro, Loveless, Ouran, Tsubasa, Millenium Snow, Kill me Kiss Me, Beauty is the Beast. My old Fav is RuroKen, I own the whole series, manga and anime. And La Corda is very quickly winning my heart.

4. Have you not seen the comm? [livejournal.com profile] libri_holic

Otherwise, just chat with her a lot, wave banners, toss ideas around. She's busy right now, so I'm not bothering her about it too much.

5. At first I didn't like Wata a whole lot, then fell for him quickly. <3 I'm one of those rare peole that like Watanuki better than Doumeki.

Other series, I'm seriously in love with Touya from CCS. Why in the name of heaven does he have to be gay? WHHHHHY. Although I love Yukito too, so I'm torn. :\ Agggh, love! XD

ALL MY QUESTIONS KEPT COMING OUT LIKE THIS:

1. Are you unaware of all the sci-fi elements in Dragonball? Aliens? Space travel? Androids, anyone?

2. Wait, where did I even say Dragonball was sci-fi? Why should it be sci-fi? All I was asked was how I got into fandom, are we debating the status of anime as a fannish pursuit?

3. I say 'fuck' too sometimes, apparently this surprises people. Would you like me to demonstrate?

4. I speak fluent cat macro too, should I do more of that?

5. ...on second thoughts, I don't want to ask what impression you have of my usual vocabulary, the answers to that question only depress me.

You could, er, answer the last two of John's questions if you like? The last one of Jade's?

I never saw this! :O I-I'm so embarrassed. >_<

Re: Dragonball. :))) It was shown here a lot of times, dubbed, when I was a kid. I grew up on Dragonball! And YYH as well. Every time my younger cousins whine about how slow the fight scenes are in Bleach/Naruto I pat their heads and tell them about Dragonball (Punch! Exposition! Commentary from the peanut gallery! Lather, rinse, repeat!).

My reasons are pretty much the same, except my first fandom was Slam Dunk, and I was thirteen. Whenever I recall my early fandom days I am filled with mortification-- I was such a fanbrat.

With Doumeki/Watanuki becoming canon: yes. Strangely, I don't write yaoi pairings that are supported in canon, like, say, Gravitation. I'd read fic happily enough, but I'd draw a blank if I ever had to write for them. I mean, why? They got together, and most of the issues were resolved...

3. Awwww. :))) That is awesome.

Watanuki. YYYYY to all of the above. *__* Initially Watanuki reminded me of Sanji from One Piece what with the turning-into-mush-in-the-presence-of-pretty-girls/Himawari, the cooking, and being utter sweethearts. I have a great fondness for them both. <3

^^; Don't worry, easy to do. Glad I mentioned it.

Every time my younger cousins whine about how slow the fight scenes are in Bleach/Naruto I pat their heads and tell them about Dragonball (Punch! Exposition! Commentary from the peanut gallery! Lather, rinse, repeat!).

And there you have put your finger on exactly why I'm so much more fond of the manga than the anime of so many of my favourite shonen series. XD All the shiney animation and colour and voices are all very well, but sometimes, the filler just isn't quite worth it.

Strangely, I don't write yaoi pairings that are supported in canon, like, say, Gravitation. I'd read fic happily enough, but I'd draw a blank if I ever had to write for them. I mean, why? They got together, and most of the issues were resolved...

*nodnod* I sometimes think one of the least recognised appeals of a lot of slash pairings is that they're never going to occur in canon, so you have that much more space to invent stuff. I mean, there are archives out there where one writer might have gotten the same couple together a dozen different ways, and they could all be a good read (in a cheesy fun kind of way, anyhow ^^;) But as soon as they actually get together in canon, it kills a lot of that. And every now and then, trying out a scenario where they actually *are* just friends and there's nothing romantic going on between them is a nice option too.

Haha, I'm sure I've never heard Watanuki compared to Sanji before. (Maybe someday I'll find the time to check out One Piece properly, but I doubt it's going to be any time soon. ^^;)
