Leaving all those Japan posts for a bit to try and clear out some of my posting backlog. Time to share a bit of what we were doing in Melbourne last month, starting with the Amaranth Ball.
As I mentioned in my first Manifest post, the ball had a few organisational problems - namely that the restaurant they picked for it was only barely large enough to fit all the tables needed to seat all the guests, leaving practically no room for anyone to dance or take photos. The food was the variety that must be expensive because it came out arranged in small, artistic portions on large plates but didn't actually taste any better than what you'd get from a lot of cheaper places, and I could not make head or tail of what was going on when they were choosing the Bell and Beau of the ball, though that was probably in part because we were on the table furthest away from the stage. But there was excellent company and lots of people in pretty costumes to ooh and ah over, and I still had a great time.
My costume - which does need a little explaining - was an attempt at coming up with something Millia Rage from Guilty Gear might wear to a ball, loosely inspired by a scene in one of the drama CDs (but mostly
velithya's fault for catching me in a moment of weakness and egging me on). The challenge with this one was to try and put something together that would be recognisabe as her style despite there not being any official art for me to base it on. White with black trim and some blue stripes were obvious for colouration. There's not much description of the dress in the drama CDs beyond Millia saying it's a little hard to move in but not too bad, which had me picturing something with a long flowing skirt with a slit in the side (also pretty distinctly Millia, even if the slits in her regular skirt don't go very high). I wanted something high necked with open shoulders, since it's shown up in official Millia art of her in alternate costumes once or twice. I also wanted long black gloves, which are another feature you can take from Millia's regular costume without much modification, and would look good with a dress in that style. I knew from the start I'd want to go with the short-haired version of Millia without her magical hair extensions. It would be less recognisable, but the long hair really is something she doesn't pull out much outside of combat and it'd be much more comfortable to dance around in without having to worry what a horrible mess they're going to be by the end of the night (something
pinneagig knows only too well after so many years of Tifa cosplay). Finally, there's the blue headband, which is such a standard Millia feature that it obviously had to be included.
Fortunately for me, this was all still pretty generic, so I didn't have much trouble finding a commercial dress pattern I could use without modifying too much. Here's the final result:

I wasn't strictly counting on the diamond shaped opening over the chest or the fact the thing is completely backless when I picked out the pattern, but it came out so nicely I would not change a thing.
Attending with me was
velithya dressed as Sol. No fancy ball clothes for Sol though, because neither of us could really picture Sol bothering to dress up for the event. Regular Sol costume it was:

I’m not sure what Millia and Sol were meant to be doing at the same social event, but… actually, scratch that. I bet there was some high profile arsehole at that party with lots of rich enemies, one of whom paid the Assassin’s Guild to take him out, so Millia’s there just waiting for the right moment. But unknown to the Guild, one of their target’s other enemies has taken the less glamourous (and probably cheaper) route of putting a bounty on his head, which explains why Sol’s there. Now Sol and Millia are about to run into each other, realise they’re here after the same guy and are going to have to sort this out somehow without blowing each other’s cover.

Of course, as far as Sol’s concerned, ‘cover’ means the dust cloud he’s going to make when he comes crashing in through one of the walls.

Yeah, this evening’s not going to end well.
I have less explanation for why we took so many vaguely shippy Sol/Millia shots during the evening, except that it was so much fun doing it.

Also attending with us was my sister
pinneagig, who made herself a version of the dress Tifa wears for the Wallmarket sequence of FFVII for the occasion.

There was also a whole huge table of others we were sitting with, hailing from several different states. Sadly, we didn't get the chance to pin many other people down for photos during the evening, but Eugene has a pretty good assortment of pics up here from the rest of the ball.
Naturally, since we were at a restaurant with a bar, we had to take some photos of Sol at the bar.

Likewise, since we had a Tifa with us (and the staff were nice enough to let us) we had to take some pics of Tifa bartending.

Which could only lead to one logical conclusion.

The other thing that comes up when you’re dressed as a blonde in white and blue and hanging out with a Sol cosplayer and both of your are diehard Sol/Ky fans is that if we just lose that distinctive Millia headband and add a gold cross on a chain, that costume could just as well double as something else….
(I can just imagine how that conversation went:
Ky: Sol, I… I got turned into a girl!
Sol: So? What’s the difference?
Ky: Damn it Sol, this is serious!
Sol: I’m serious. Strap down that chest, put on your regular uniform and go to work tomorrow. No-one’s gonna be able to tell a thing.)
You can guess what that meant: more shippy pictures!

There were also cross-shaped earrings to go with this version, sadly too small to show up in any of the photos. One of these went missing towards the end of the evening, only to lead to general LOLs when it turned up again much later stuck down
velithya’s pants.
Yeaaah, can’t imagine what we could possibly have been doing that could have lead to that happening. >.>

*cough*
Finally, I had to include this one we took with a random other guest just because it amused us so much. Spot the invisible ninja!

Also, the little silver-lit tree in the background of your photo? That's where I got popped the question. ^///////^ <3

Date: 2008-10-31 10:24 am (UTC)X-mas dress? Which one's that? Though probably not, I think two Millia costumes will about do me.
no subject
Date: 2008-10-31 02:57 pm (UTC)Of course there are other Millia outfits you could do to.
no subject
Date: 2008-11-01 04:56 am (UTC)Well I do plan to make plenty of use out of those two Millia costumes I've got! (certainly not something to apologise for, thanks ^_^)

Date: 2008-10-31 10:18 pm (UTC)Because next up is three Ky costumes, right? ^____^

Date: 2008-11-01 01:44 am (UTC)(Does he have three costumes? Are you including the one that's just a shirt with fancy cross buttons? ._.)
no subject
Date: 2008-11-01 01:50 am (UTC)(idek, he's got at least two and I figured there was maybe something in one of the artbooks that looked different? OH WAIT. TWO, AND THEN ONE "BATTLE" VERSION! AHAHAHA *shot*)

Date: 2008-11-01 02:35 am (UTC)While I'm spamming pics, how the hell am I going to make this buckle thing? (http://www.guiltygear.ru/images/gallery/ggxplus_mm_20.jpg) ;_;
no subject
Date: 2008-11-02 06:52 am (UTC)That's totally a zip that goes down the front of his shirt, so I think it's actually impossible for the, uh, underneath part of the buckle to attach on to it at all - at least not and still function as a shirt. HMM. I'd recommend as a starting measure going to the buckle shop and seeing what they have in the way of crazy things like that, if they have anything that you can modify into something that looks similar?
no subject
Date: 2008-11-02 12:05 pm (UTC)if I even try to plan past my next three costumes I will go crazy in the head, srslyWE WILL SEE.The third pic there is Ky's official undershirt for his Order uniform, and I'd definitely want to be making a costume which has layered accuracy, so that'd be one of the first things to make. It's going to be awfully fiddly though - especially finding a way to do that belt around the middle without cutting off how far I can raise my arms.
how are our black pleather stocks holding up right now?The buckle shop is probably a very good place to start though. Maybe I could cheat on the front and put an invisible zip down the back...no subject
Date: 2008-11-02 12:45 pm (UTC)I'd definitely want to be making a costume which has layered accuracy
ORLY WELL I SHOULD HOPE SO ;P *cough*
Okay let me just run to the other computer and see whether I can locate those photos-
Okay, looks like Min made it much like the way the shirts under our awesome coats work - that belt actually goes around him and (fully) around his arms, it connects the sleeves to the rest of it. And she just used a normal buckle, too.
Is that the only picture of it? Because if it's not, might be worth checking the others to see if they all have the crazy buckle or not. :psy:
and you totally should have the zip down the front because you want it to be layeredly accurate, remember? ;P
ps. sami says hi :)
no subject
Date: 2008-11-02 01:02 pm (UTC)There are a few others, and they all agree on that particular detail. None that would tell you whether there's a zip down the front, but it's probably a pretty good guess.

Yeah, that's how it looks in all the pics. The issue is whether I'll have strapped my arms down for the day doing that. Do you remember whether she had any trouble raising her arms in it? Pleather doesn't stretch very much.
...think I could talk her into lending me the costume to have a look at?and you totally should have the zip down the front because you want it to be layeredly accurate, remember? ;P
WITHIN REASON.
...
so do you think it zips from the top or from the bottom?(hi Sami!)
no subject
Date: 2008-11-02 01:18 pm (UTC)It looked like she had a little bit of slack in the belt so it wasn't too constricting? I mean, she was doing Ky's Fuuraiken pose with the hilt of the sword up near her head, so she was getting at least one elbow up kind of high?
And while I can't say that I'm sure she wouldn't mind, since I guess I don't know her that well anymore, I'm pretty sure you could talk her into it.
...and if nothing else I have pretty good documentation of it coming off, once I remove some photos that I'm not allowed to show anyone. In mine I used an invisible zip and it zips from the top down like a normal zippered jacket thingy.

I got to the shot of us on the stairs and I heard the MGS ! sound in my head :D SO STARTLED.
Damn straight it does! GUNFLAAAAME~
And then I got to the shippy pictures and I'm like "...WHAT HAPPENED TO MY BINDER :O" also I'm glad that the next couple times I cosplayed I had my headband down more, I can see too much of my forehead ^^;
I REALLY LIKE THE SHOT WHERE I AM PICKING YOU UP. LIKE, TIMES A MILLION.

Date: 2008-10-31 11:04 am (UTC)MGS?
Part of me is tempted to try to write the rest of that scene with Sol and Millia at the same ball, but oh hey there giant WIP list! But I've probably covered the best parts in the summary anyway.

I did not actually notice that until you pointed it out just there. ^^; But it's probably the same for all of us that we nitpick our own costumes twice as much as everyone else's
unless we're looking at someone else who's done done the same costume we've done and done it wrong which is a whooooole other ballgame. And you still have an excellent smirk in that pic. *g*SO WE SHOULD REMEMBER THAT POSE FOR FUTURE REFERENCE, YES?
GIP
Date: 2008-10-31 01:40 pm (UTC)Metal Gear Solid! The little alarm noise the guards make when they spot you, and they get a little ! over their heads, it's awesome.
It would be an awesome illustrated story! Maybe something to do at some point when you get bored, but not officially on the list...?
It's less pec and more chest by that stage, sadly, but I guess that's what I get for wearing a costume that is half lycra!
PEOPLE DOING IT WRONG JUST MAKE ME WANT TO DO IT RIGHT. BY WHICH I MEAN BETTER, BUT STILL. COSPLAY BITCH AND ALLI AM VERY FOND OF MY SMIRK ;)YES, YES WE SHOULD. \o/
Re: GIP
Date: 2008-10-31 02:17 pm (UTC)Even if we weren't thinking about that particular little scenario when we took those photos on the stairs, they turned out awfully appropriate for it. And hey, if you ever need a surprised Sol picture...
And I'll be sure to bring everything to PenCafe tomorrow!

Date: 2008-11-01 01:53 am (UTC)AHAHAHA. I think the ! might need to be red rather than white, though, but you might want to check with Cessie? I haven't actually played that much MGS ^^;

Date: 2008-12-12 02:41 pm (UTC)...then a couple of weeks ago I pulled it out for another event, started making a few repairs and wound up thinking "You know what this needs? BUCKLES!" So the repairs became a bit more extensive than they were going to be. XD Fortunately, I'm once again very happy with the result, and hopefully this time it'll be the end of it. ^^;
