Somewhere in this evening's dinner table conversation the fact came up that, as part of some sort of special presentation, my youngest sister's class was shown an *Aragorn/Borimir music video* in English today. To music from Moulin Rouge, no less.

The justification? *Demonstrating intertextuality*. (Well, naturally!)

Her response to this has so far consisted mainly of baffled awe at how well it was put together. The class's collective response seems to have included stunned silence. She also swears that particular song is never going to sound the same again.

I am sure this knowledge will cease to be amusing and wonderful eventually, but it may take a while.

Edit:

The state finals are on this weekend, a.k.a. the second last competition I'll have in this state this year. They've got me doing a *Charleston*, of all godforsaken dances this time around, so should anyone want to point and laugh to see me in a flapper dress blackmail material to watch, drop me a line and I'll send you the details.

That's fabulous! The world _needs_ slash, Cathy!

I'll be at the competition, send me some details. :-)

Actually, the best part was that as an (*ahem*) 'educational aid', it must have worked brilliantly. It was the only part of the whole presentation that stuck in her mind, and she was practically in disbelief how well it had been edited together (how the scenes fit with the music and the equivalent scenes from the movie etc etc).

I would've loved to know who was responsible for that presentation. And, say, whether we might ever have met them at a con or some such.

(P.S. Will email you the competition details when I get home today.)

Thanks very much, I've got them. :-)

While we're here, my guess is that her name is Cathy Cupitt, she's a sometime Curtin lecturer and otherwise full- time slash person, I don't know if we've ever actually met her at Swancon, but I've seen her around. We should track her down and thank her.

Now you mention it, we definitely have met her at cons (or at least been to panels she's helped run), and that would make a lot of sense.

Technically it was some sort of special full day English conference thing at Curtin which her class was sent to. Apparently there were kids from a lot of other schools at it as well, and a lot of other lectures, they just didn't leave quite so much of an impression.

And to think that we had her going to a Catholic school no so long ago. *g*

Even though I am all the way over here on the other side of the world, I think I can still sneak in a couple of crowbar shots to the knee on the competition...

Best of luck! ^__^

Gah, you couldn't have snuck in a few hours earlier could you? I came *last* today! Honestly, you leave the country and look what happens.

Actually, scratch that, how about kneecapping the judges instead? Far more satisfying, and for all we know it'll probably make them judge *better*.
