So many WIPs, so little time

rallamajoopI have reached that point with my WIP list lately where no matter what I sit down to work on, there will be that nagging voice in the back of my mind telling me I really ought to be working on one of the other ones (it would be nice if this at least deterred me from compounding the problem by starting new stuff, but... well, let's just say that recent fling with Inception fandom has not done much to help matters). In the usual Catch 22 of such matters, this is not helping my productivity on anything.
So in hope of getting my priorities in some kind of logical order (and also out of general curiosity), have a poll:

Date: 2010-11-24 07:51 pm (UTC)First of all, I'm sure you know that animated video of Guilty Gear X, with Ky's infamous, immortal, incredibly narmy, hilarious "OH NO I'M FALLING!" line. I'd love to read a fanfiction about that. Maybe something with the "Embarrassing Rescue" trope?
Second, a Dragon Quest/Dungeons and Dragons AU with Hero!Ky and Evil Overlord!Sol. Maybe the hero is on a Quest to defeat the Evil Overlord who has been terrorizing the kingdom? Or maybe the Evil Overlord has stolen some sacred treasure and the hero is sent to retrieve it? Anything would work, really, I just want to see Hero!Ky and Evil Overlord!Sol in a fantasy setting :P
Third, even though technically Ky is already a cop and Sol is already a criminal, the series does very little with that. Ky pursues Sol out of personal reasons more than anything else, and never actually tries to arrest him, not even in that one ending where he defeats him; as for Sol, we never see him pursued by anybody besides Ky. So, I'd like to see a "police" AU set in modern times with Cop!Ky and Criminal!Sol; no Crusades, no destruction of Japan, no End Of The World As We Know It, just something like a crime show.

Date: 2010-11-26 07:55 am (UTC)You know, I actually did read a fic about that scene once, which I found somewhere in the bowels of The Pit way back when I first got into the fandom and (I can only assume) was desperate enough for fic to read anything, because it was drivel. Between that association and how my default reaction to bad dubbing is to mentally filter it out, I don't think there's much I could do with that one.
The police AU idea could work brilliantly, but you'd probably need someone with more interest in crime shows than me to pull it off.
I do have to admit I have a real fondness for the image of Overlord!Sol though (for which I place all the blame on the work of certain Japanese fanartists >.>). I don't know what I could actually do with it in a fic, since it tips the power differential between them even further in Sol's favour than usual (giving him the physical *and* the political power, when the latter is usually more Ky's territory) - not that the idea needs to be taken uber-seriously, but there's limited potential in what would probably otherwise go 'Ky shows up, Sol swats him like a bug'... hm. *ponders options*

Date: 2010-11-26 10:55 am (UTC)To be honest, I read that one too (the ER trope is one of my very favourite tropes ever, so I actively look for that kind of fic in every Fandom I'm in; and the FALLING line is so infamous/hilarious that I searched every GG fanfiction archive hoping to find at least one fic that did something with it). But I completely dismissed that fanfiction as "does not count".
Because the author outright admits that she has never played any GG game and has no idea who Sol and Ky are; she just watched the video, liked it, got some very vague very basic info from the comments, and started writing. She didn't even know that Sol isn't a human being, even though Guilty Gear is the freaking name of the series.
That really annoys me. You like something enough to want to write a multi-chapter fanfiction about it, but don't even bother to do a five-minute wiki-search about it? You just make up the backstory and characterization? And you brag in the author's notes that you have no clue who the characters actually are? Come on!
Drivel written by fans who can't write is one thing. At least they care. Their terrible fics are an expression of their love for the source material. But she didn't even have that excuse >_>
Not trying to be pushy here, just saying that, even with identical premise, your writing could in no way be associated with that one :P

Maybe the otherwise-invincible Sol has got a weakness that Ky can exploit. Like Superman is all invincible and stuff, but gets weak and sick in presence of kryptonite.
Or maybe Sol has just been fighting another opponent (That Man?) and is still tired and injured. You know, like the fanwank/justification for that one ending where Ky defeats Sol, that Sol is still tired and hurt after having fought Dizzy.
Or maybe the Evil Overlord doesn't want to make the Hero a martyr, because that would inspire La Resistance to fight even harder, so instead he wants the Hero to admit defeat in order to make La Resistance feel betrayed and give up.
Or maybe Sol is interested in some kind of secret Ky knows, and dead people can't talk.
Maybe Sol is the kind of Evil Overlord who isn't really interested in conquering the world, but just wants to rule his own place from his Fortress of Doom, and he figures that if he swatted the OMG EVERYBODY LOVES HIM then whole armies would come to his doorstep and be a total pain in the butt.

So far, my brain has thrown up ideas for The One Where Sol Is Some Kind Of Legendary Weapon Asleep In A Cave (but not really lord of anything), a Dragonheart AU, and The One Where Ky Is A Long-Suffering Political Envoy To The Country Of The Gears. I am either getting Overlord!Sol or Hero!Ky, but never both together.

Oh, don't remind me, I am actually a little embarrassed it ended up as such a serious fic. ^^; It's like, in order to justify a bit of cracky fun with Nate and Wade meeting in highschool, I had to write a whole treatise on how Cable's life would have been different if he'd been cured and sent home in his teen years to live with his messed up single Dad. Not that I'm not still having terrible amounts of fun with it all, of course.
